THREAD ON URGENT NEED TO HELP OHIO END THIS THING --share widely

Last night's debate was appalling in so many ways

Trump's behavior. His lies. His refusal to condemn white supremacists--telling them to "stand by."

But the last 5 minutes were the...

1/

secure.actblue.com/donate/ohdems
...scariest of all.

Re-watch them if you can. Pressed again and again, he not only refused to say he'd accept the results of the election...he actually made clear that there are millions of votes he has no intention of counting if he has his way.

2/

secure.actblue.com/donate/ohdems
Watch it. Again.

He makes it very clear. Under his plan, millions of votes simply won't be counted. (And Chris Wallace didn't call him on it).

Now, of course we can't let that plan happen. We will fight for very vote to be counted. In every state. In Ohio.

3/
But here's the truth.

His plan doesn't work in Ohio. And it doesn't work anywhere if Ohio is blue.

Why? Six reasons:

4/

secure.actblue.com/donate/ohdems
First, our early votes are counted and announced first. (Except for the ones still in the mail on Election Day, which have 10 days to arrive), 8:00 p.m. or so on election night.

There won't be anything to challenge here. Or a long delay.

Our EVs are counted and out first

5/
Second, our mail-in ballots are only sent to those who have applied, so Trump's BS claim about directly sent ballots doesn't apply here.

He can't apply his conspiracy theory to Ohio's mailed in ballots.

6/

secure.actblue.com/donate/2020-su…
Third, our Secretary of State is a Republican. So is our Governor. And they both have made clear that our VBM system is not susceptible to fraud.

So Trump can't claim "Dems rigged the election."

secure.actblue.com/donate/ohdems

7/
Fourth, our Electoral College votes are decisive. If Ohio is blue, as we saw in 2012 with the famous Karl Rove walk, the election is over.

And everyone knows it. Other states later counts are academic at that point.

8/

nytimes.com/2012/11/08/us/…
Fifth, the polls are tied here, despite less investment here than other states.

Our suburbs have flipped. Our economy is doing poorly.

Ohio is prime to turn blue with a major push in these closing weeks.

9/

foxnews.com/official-polls…
Sixth, Trump is running low on money.

So even though he's tied here, or behind, he is currently "dark" on television. He keeps cancelling all his TV ads because he wants to buy ads in Florida and other states. he can't afford it here.

So now is the moment to strike.

10/
Others are starting to catch on to the reality that Ohio is Biden's "best shot" at ending not just the Trump presidency, but the nightmarish plan of a contested race.

11/

news.yahoo.com/ohio-could-be-…
But to make this opportunity a reality, we desperately need your help

The other day, when I 1st tweeted about this, we raised more money than we ever have online in a single day

Now that Trump has doubled down and clarified his intention, we need even more help this time

12/
So whatever you can do to give, and to spread the word that a blue Ohio is not only possible, but ends all this, please do.

Thank you for your support.

Appointing the 🦊 to guard the 🐔 house (when the 🦊 has a hen in its mouth)

A 🧵

At the risk of souring your Sunday mood, I have an update on a story from my recent visit to Athens.

It’s quick. Read on…

1/
The basic story I shared was that Ohio’s five-member Ohio Oil and Gas Commission voted to re-open an injection well that had been found leaking dangerous chemicals, which led to six more months of leaking.

2/ Image
And I exposed how the makeup of the commission (all appointed by the Governor) which made that decision comprised a stacked deck in favor of industry.

Well, it gets worse….

Ohio Attorney General Yost truly thinks Ohioans have short memories, or are just plain dumb

A quick 🧵

When he was using his official position to try to scare Ohioans into voting against Issue 1 last year, Yost released a legal “analysis” to show the dramatic..

…impact of the new right to reproductive freedom that was on the ballot

Here’s the impact he described then:

The new language would “create a new standard that goes further than Casey’s ‘undue burden’ test or Roe’s

‘strict scrutiny’ test and will make it harder for OH to maintain the kinds of laws already upheld as valid prior to…Dobbs. In other words, the Amendment would give greater protection to abortion to be free from regulation than at any time in OH history.”

ALEC “scholarships”

A 🧵

Scholarship: (n)
•“a grant-in-aid to a student” (Merriam Webster)
•“a sum of money or other aid granted to a student, because of merit, need, etc., to pursue their studies.” ()

1/Dictionary.com
It’s a simple, consistent definition:

Financial help to a student. To learn. To get educated. By someone who knows more.

And generally seen as a good thing, right?

2/
But when I came across the term “scholarship” being used in a different context, it outraged me.

I must’ve muttered it a number of times. Imagine this scene from one of my favorite movies growing up—but substitute “scholarship” for “refund”:

Jail time for voter registration?

Echos from the Jim Crow past

A 🧵

In the height of Jim Crow Alabama, a Black voter trying to register to vote would face the form below.

Look at question 16 in particular: asking if they’d ever seen the registration form before

1/ Image
What was that about?

Well, civil rights groups like the NAACP and others were working hard to help voters register across the South—which included onerous forms and literacy/character tests.

So they would prep those voters for what traps and tricks to be prepared for.

2/
Of course, the Jim Crow state govts who set up all those traps and tricks and tests didn’t like that groups were trying to help voters overcome them.

So question 16 was a way to get voters to reveal who was helping them.

Had they practiced? W what groups? What people? Etc.

Ohio’s LG Jon Husted is very fond of using AI to update Ohio regulations.

He even got rid of rules for lottery games that haven’t been used in decades.

But we all know that the biggest problem in Ohio isn’t outdated lottery games, but rampant corruption.

And dark money is fueling much of it.

1/

axios.com/local/columbus…
So, I asked AI what we could do about the crisis of corruption via regulation of dark money in Ohio. In no time at all, it provided a number of clear answers:

It’s Working!

A 🧵 on how a new grassroots model shows us the way to support candidates running everywhere

We can do this, America!!

We can run everywhere if we all pitch in. Here’s how:

1/
Two years ago, a small group of us set out to solve a problem—a problem most don’t see as a problem.

But a problem so big that it is eating at the heart of American democracy.

2/
And the problem is that while explosions in small-dollar contributions have been working wonders supporting federal candidates in certain swing states in recent years, almost no money flows to most statehouse candidates.
