November 27, 2024: Our X/Twitter account (@threadreaderapp) got hacked and unrolls aren't working right now. We appreciate your patience until this is resolved.
Today we’re announcing a new plan to reduce immigration and curb the abuse of our visa system.
Here is what we're doing 🧵👇
Firstly, we’re reforming the Health and Social Care Visa to prevent overseas care workers from bringing dependants to the UK.
And we’re requiring social care firms in England to be CQC registered to sponsor visas, putting an end to abuse of the system.
We’re increasing the minimum earnings threshold for skilled workers by 48% to £38,700, encouraging businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce.
Following the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Migration Partnership with Rwanda, Prime Minister @RishiSunak is taking the immediate steps necessary to deliver our promise to stop the boats.
Here’s our plan and the progress so far ⬇️
Today's ruling confirmed that removing asylum seekers to a safe third country is lawful.
We're working on a new treaty with Rwanda, ready to be finalised.
We'll also be prepared to change any domestic laws or international relationships that block our plans.
Our current asylum system isn't right or fair. We’re tackling it by:
📜 Introducing new laws, so if you come here illegally you can’t stay
🌎 Agreeing new deals globally to stop the boats at source
❌ Clamping down on social media content luring people into illegal crossings
Today we're adopting a new approach to Net Zero that is pragmatic, proportionate and realistic – meeting upcoming targets without adding burdens to working families.
We have led on reducing emissions faster than any other major economy.
A thread🧵
Because of the progress we have already made, the UK’s share of global emissions is now less than 1%.
As we continue to cut emissions, we also need to make sure we do not lose the consent of the British people facing higher living costs.
The UK is a world leader in cutting emissions, surpassing the targets most countries have set for 2030 including Australia, Canada, Japan and the US.
