THREAD: In an exclusive interview with @OfficerStephNY, Shereese Francis’ family spoke on her 2012 death, which some have compared to George Floyd’s. ietv.co/2GoFckD
1/ On March 15, 2012, Shauna Francis called 311 for help with getting her little sister, Shereese, to take her schizophrenia medication. ietv.co/2GoFckD
2/ “Never in our wildest dreams had we thought that calling for help would have led to her death. It's like I couldn't fathom it. I was in disbelief. You know?” ietv.co/2GoFckD
3/ Calling authorities for help was something Shereese’s family did from time to time when she refused to take her medicine. ietv.co/2GoFckD
4/ “So when they came, to my surprise, it wasn't the paramedics who came before. It was the police officers. Four officers came, and they asked me where she was, and I said, ‘Well, she's downstairs.’ So we went downstairs.” ietv.co/2GoFckD
5/ “So she saw them and she was just, ‘Who are you? What are you doing here?’” Both Shauna and Shereese's best friend Sunshine Williams-Smith said Shereese had never been arrested or had any involvement whatsoever with law enforcement. ietv.co/2GoFckD
6/ Shauna says Shereese was diagnosed with schizophrenia in college. She feels like it should’ve been clear to officers that they were handling what the NYPD calls an Emotionally Disturbed Person by the way she responded to their commands. ietv.co/2GoFckD
7/ “I guess they're telling her, ‘You have to go to the hospital. You have to go to the hospital.’ She said, ‘I'm not going anywhere. You get out of my house right now. Get out of my house right now. Out!’…” ietv.co/2GoFckD
8/ “…So she started walking to go up the stairs. By the stairs, there is a bed. She went towards the staircase, and I heard one of the officers say, ‘Don't let her go! Don't let her pass! Don't let her go up the stairs!’” ietv.co/2GoFckD
9/ “That's when everything turned worse. They tackled her onto the bed. She ended up face down on the bed, and the police officer was on top of her, in her back…” ietv.co/2GoFckD
10/ “…I trusted these police officers. I thought they knew what they were doing, so I just kept saying, ‘Shereese, please cooperate. They're just trying to help you to get back to the hospital.’” ietv.co/2GoFckD
11/ As her sister kept screaming, “Get off of me!” Shauna remembers pacing back and forth because it was so difficult to watch. ietv.co/2GoFckD
12/ “Then, all of a sudden, it went silent. There was complete silence in the room. So then I looked, and I said, 'Wait. What's going on?' She was laying there, just lifeless.” ietv.co/2GoFckD

Black (and Native) Americans are both disproportionately killed by the police and more likely to be disabled than white Americans. Around 11 million disabled Black Americans and their families live with a daily fear of encountering police violence. ietv.co/3ieYbeM

An increase in death threats against the FBI and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland since the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago is reportedly leading to discussions about increasing their security. @LESTRENTtv has the very latest 🧵:

2/ “I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded every citizen under the constitution,” Trump wrote on social media. “I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer.”
U.S Department of Justice Announces Sentencing of Man Who Enticed Young Girl to Produce Child Pornography 🧵:
1/ The U.S Department of Justice released a statement on Aug. 9 announcing a federal charge against a California man who was found guilty of luring young girls, some as young as 9 years old, to film themselves in “sexually explicit ways.”

1/ A Mississippi grand jury has declined to indict Emmett TIll’s accuser, according to the Associated Press. Carolyn Bryant Donham, who is white, had been facing possible charges of kidnapping and manslaughter after her accusation led to Till's lynching almost 70 years ago.
2/ The Leflore County grand jury determined there was insufficient evidence to indict Donham, now in her 80s, the AP reported. This comes following a renewed investigation by the Department of Justice closed last December.
Gabby Petito's parents have alleged that Moab officers Eric Pratt and Daniel Robbins failed to properly handle a 911 call made on Aug. 12, 2021, in which a witness said they saw Brian Laundrie hitting Petito. Laundrie killed Petito later that month.
1/ Their attorneys announced Monday they would be filing a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Moab City police department, the officers who interacted with her days before her death, and two former leaders in the department.

It was a crime of passion that had every New Yorker rapt with attention in the summer of 1972. 3 armed men entered a Brooklyn bank, thinking it would be a straightforward heist, but fate had other plans. The event would go on to inspire a classic film. #NewYorkGritty 🎞️🧵:
1/ On Aug. 22, 1972, John Wojtowicz, Salvatore Naturile & Robert Westenberg attempted to rob a bank in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Gravesend. Unbeknownst to them, the money in the vault had already been collected earlier that day, leaving the branch with half the funds expected.
2/ Within minutes of the robbers entering the bank, a teller triggered an alarm that alerted police to the crime unfolding. Cops dashed to the scene on Avenue P in and formed a perimeter around the bank. 1 of the 3 would-be robbers fled once police showed up.
A new study shows that cats may be just as affectionate as dogs. The study, which was published in Current Biology, found that pet cats also have distinct attachment styles toward their owners in the same way dogs and babies do. 🧵 ietv.co/3iWev78
1/5 The research, which was done by a team at Oregon State University, also found that 64 percent of cats showed what is known as a "secure" attachment style.
2/5 What does that mean? These cats showed no signs of distress when their caregivers left the room and a healthy mix of attachment and exploration when they returned.
