The reason 2020 seems so jinxed is that global civilization relies on natural and human networks of such complexity that their interactions generate unpredictable events with increasing frequency. It started as far back as Brexit in 2016 and has been accelerating ever since.
The understandable hope that 2021 will bring new "luck" may be cruelly dashed. The danger is that 2021 will be even stranger than 2020.
The cherished establishment goal of a "return to normalcy" may be a mirage. The old world may be gone forever and the new one disconcertingly strange.
We've got to do what can be done now, as circumstances permit instead of waiting tiĺl everything is back to the way it was.

Anthony Blinken's analysis of the Gaza peace deal reveals the framework of his thinking. "First, what changed to make this breakthrough possible? Hamas is finally and fully isolated. Arab states and Turkey have said 'enough.' .. delegitimized it ..."

He seems to think this was mostly due to Biden. "We can expect to see joyful images ... we’ve seen these images before. Under President Biden’s watch, we secured the release of 135 hostages and... a ceasefire ... and a post conflict plan"

But drat! Biden's precious legacy to Trump was thrown in the trash. "That moment was squandered. Israel and Hamas went back to war." All that diplomatic effort down the drain.

Today's debt and deficit crisis is the 21st century equivalent of the 1930s Great Depression creating conditions “very much analogous” to the years leading up to World War II.

Western welfare politics is an absorbing state from which there is no exit. The deficit has to keep increasing to pay for the deficit.

The amazing sight of politicians unable to denounce men in girl's rooms, political violence etc frozen like deer in the headlights underscores what a prison it is or has become. The Woke are like inmates in a penitentiary of their own device.

"The state board that granted Roberts a license to serve as superintendent said that process included background checks by the state police and FBI." Crucially, none of the checks inquired into his immigration status.

edition.cnn.com/2025/09/29/us/…
The background checkers categorically say their scope did not include immigration.

Roberts didn't con his way into the Iowa School Board. They opened a backdoor for him. The moment he complied, he became beholden to the Board because they could send him to jail any time. Trouble was, he was exposed independently.

What scenes must be occurring in Gaza even now. In the days prior to the Battle of Manila the doomed Japanese garrison became like beasts in their last despair. Let me share some stories I heard from survivors.

The death of the Axis and neutral civilians. The German, Italian, Spanish and neutral European clergy, diplomats and civilians who fled to churches and embassies were systematically executed by the Japanese. The memorials are still there.
The massacre of the civilians. The Japanese burned out homes and bayoneted those who ran. Two of my aunts in a house near the ballpark fled past the troops losing one of their infant children to a thrust.

Subic to be a logistics hub. This implies is that Luzon will be the southern flank of Taiwan and Okinawa the northern flank.

philstar.com/headlines/2025…
Grand strategy is largely about logistics and supply chains. Reshoring, lines of communication, production rates and human capital base are more significant than a snapshot of forces. The current admin seems to understand this a little more than the last.
The role of the Philippines is to make it hard for Chinese amphibious forces to simply grab the supply dumps. It will require a lot of men to take Luzon.

A shattered political landscape not just in the US, but in Europe and possibly Russia too. Only China looks unchanging but it is not ...
What happened in the West, I think, is that its consensus future -- open borders, one world, multiculturalism, the rule based system -- IOW the certitudes of 2000, have disappeared. Today we have a present but no future.
It died in 3 stages. First the Muslims didn't go along with it and we had the GWOT. Second in reaction the elites turned the consensus future into a Woke religion and the culturally Christian wouldn't go along with it and it sparked the global populist revolt.
