Cleanthes & Deschamps: The Water Carriers

Before a game between @ManUtd & @juventusfcen in 1996, Utdโ€™s Eric Cantona sparked a row with Juveโ€™s Didier Deschamps.

โ€œHe gets by because he gives 100% but he will never be more than a water carrier,โ€ said Cantona.
โ€œThe water carrierโ€ was also the nickname given to Cleanthes (born 330 BC), who literally had the job of transporting water in Athens.

Cleanthes was noted for continuing his manual labours even after becoming a well-known Stoic philosopher.
Cantonaโ€™s implication was that Deschamps lacked ability and was only capable of doing โ€œdirty work.โ€

Deschamps response was simple:

โ€œA water carrier? Yes, thatโ€™s exactly what I am. Great teams are not just created by the architect but also by bricklayers and hod carriers.โ€
When a king asked Cleanthes why he continued to draw water, he said:

โ€œIs drawing water all I do? What? Do I not dig? What? Do I not water the garden? Or undertake any other labour for the love of philosophy?โ€
When Utd and Juve met in the @ChampionsLeague in 1996, it was Deschampsโ€™ team who prevailed, going on to finish runners-up.

Deschamps won Europeโ€™s top club competition twice in his career.

He also went on to win the @FIFAWorldCup with @FFF as both a player and a coach.
Cleanthes, initially derided for his workmanlike approach, slowly gained respect and admiration.

Throughout it all, he held himself to the highest standards.

He went on to become, following itโ€™s founder Zeno, the second head of the Stoic school.
Deschamps wasnโ€™t the gifted player that Cantona was but he was the player coaches could always rely on to work hard.

At the end of the 20th century @francefootball voted for their French Player of the Century.

Deschamps came 9th. Cantona came 10th.

Not bad for a water carrier.
Diogenes wrote the following eulogy of Cleanthes, who lived to be 100 years old:

โ€œI praise Cleanthes, but praise Hades more,
Who could not bear to see him grown so old.
So gave him rest among the dead,
Whoโ€™d drawn such a load of water while alive.โ€

Not bad for a water carrier.
TLDR:

Donโ€™t be afraid to carry water.

Hold yourself to the highest standards, no matter the task.

Hard work is the great leveller.

7 cool @lizandmollie graphics accompanied by relevant philosophy quotes:

1.
"Well-being is realized by small steps, but is truly no small thing."

โ€Šโ€”โ€ŠZeno of Citium Image
2.
"โ€œWhat progress, you ask, have I made? I have begun to be a friend to myself.โ€

That was indeed a great benefit; such a person can never be alone.

You may be sure that such a man is a friend to all mankind."

โ€”Seneca, Letters 6.7 Image
3.
"No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.

If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer that there must be time.

Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen."

โ€”Epictetus, Discourses 1.15 Image

13 mental tools to keep "at hand" today and every day.

(Stoic perspectives to beat anxious feelings)

๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Accept what the present is offering.

With the attitude that everything is a gift, an opportunity to learn,

problems can be seen as challenges, obstacles as tests.
2. Ask "Is this necessary?"

A lot of what we do simply isn't essential.

Does what you're doing or worrying about actually matter?

Could your time be better used elsewhere?

"When I can no longer bear your tortures I will cut off my tongue with my teeth so as not to speak."

These principled words came from someone facing imminent death.

Not a tenacious ancient philosopher as you might think.

But a 19-year-old Italian woman.

Here's her story ๐Ÿ‘‡
While most women who joined the Italian Resistance during World War II were nurses or messengers, Clorinda Menguzzato fought alongside the men.

Part of the Gherlenda partisansโ€™ battalion, she was given the nom de guerre of โ€œVeglia.โ€

On 8 October 1944, Menguzzato was captured.
What followed was four nights of brutal torture at the hands of the Nazis, designed to make her reveal the whereabouts of her comrades.

She refused.

9 reassuring Stoic lessons on death ๐Ÿ’€

Epictetus:
1. Neither death nor pain is to be feared, but the fear of pain or death

2. The poor body must be separated from the spirit as it was before, either now or later. Why then are you troubled if it be now? For if not now, later
Seneca:
3. We must make ready for death before making ready for life

4. Death would be a thing to dread if it could stay. But it either doesnโ€™t come, or comes & is gone

5. What matters is not how long you live, but how well; & often living well means that you cannot live long
6. There are no ills to be suffered after death, reports that make the underworld terrible to us are mere tales

7. Let us order our minds as if we had come to the end. Let us postpone nothing. Let us balance lifeโ€™s account every day.

The following are short Stoic journal prompts you can use at different milestones in your day โ€” morning, afternoon, and evening.

Covering the whole day means youโ€™re able to prepare for what you may face, deal with events as they happen, and review how you did.
Morning:

1. What difficulties am I likely to encounter today?

2. What one thing do I most need to get done today?

3. What am I grateful for today?

Stoic thoughts for dealing with feelings of insecurity.

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
You canโ€™t ease feelings of insecurity by trying to change external factors.

Your perspective of a situation is key to formulating your response.
"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them."

- Epictetus, Enchiridion 5
