Ogun prioritizes early detection and treatment of cancers for 2021

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker made this known during a free breast and cervical screening and awareness programme which was flagged off by the Wife of the Ogun State Governor, @MrsBAbiodun in commemoration of 2020 Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ImageImageImageImage
Coker, who revealed that 51% of Nigeria's cancer cases result in death compared to the United States of America's 19%, said government at all levels has become cognizant of the need to scale up awareness of the disease & roll out sustainable interventions as a matter of urgency.
She disclosed that her Ministry has taken into account cancer management in the 2021 Annual Operational Plan for the Health Sector, adding that focus would be on breast and cervical cancers which are the most common types amongst women in Nigeria.
The commissioner added that cancer awareness would be incorporated into the routine health promotion messages in all health care facilities across the State, to promote early detection and the survival rate of women in Ogun State.
According to her, "In Nigeria cancer is responsible for 72,000 deaths & 102,000 new cases annually.
It is worthy to note that the two most common types of cancer responsible for approximately 50.3% of all cancer cases in Nigeria occur among women and it is breast & cervical cancers.
"Particularly challenging is the mortality incidence ratio of cancer for Nigeria when compared to other Nations. As a result, Nigeria presently has its National Cancer plan for years 2018-2022, which spelled out the road map for cancer intervention in Nigeria.
While appreciating the Wife of the State Governor, the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter for collaborating with the State government for the awareness and screening programme, Coker called on women across the state to take advantage of the programme.
