1) You can't have your kid running up the credit card. That's common sense that every family understands. They (states) will have no responsibility going forward (like they are trying not to take today) for the choices they made & the consequences they face for those choices.
2) Where/when do they "learn" to behave differently if they just pass off the consequences for what they chose? The federal govt doesn't earn money... it takes it from citizens. If citizens that vote for less state largesse & less state govt intrusion into their lives & get a
3) that's fiscally sound BECAUSE of their votes, what have we taught them when we use THEIR tax dollars for the states of other citizens that voted for leaders with unsound, unworkable policies that produced unplayable debt? Citizens own this & need more civics & understanding
4) of the consequences of their votes. No better way than to make them, and they alone, own those consequences. It doesn't get better, and will only repeat, if we don't use this hard truth and tough love.

One more time (everybody can join in if you know it): The United States is a Federation of Sovereign States. THEY made a contract (the Constitution) which every subsequent state to join the union signed on to. Those states, in the federation, elect the president. Always have.
The states elect the president through the electoral college. It was and is still the only way to keep our federation/union of states together. The people are represented in the House of Representatives, the States were meant to be represented in the Senate (the 14th Amendment
Changed that (to our great peril. Senators are now free agents, answerable only to the donors that provide enough money to get elected across a whole state- much bigger problem that a congressman. Or worse, are wealthy enough to self-fund).
