I wrote an article about damage that can't be seen:

The police brutality that happens in the dark, away from cameras and never recorded

The incidents that don't make it onto police press releases

Injuries that don't leave scars

laurajedeed.medium.com/these-invisibl…
The article talks about the strangeness of protesting in a city that lives in the national spotlight one moment, then vanishes into darkness the next. Reality as perceived by the outside world

How the spotlight can blind us to violence that occurs outside its narrow focus
I also talk about the good that responsible journalists can do at protests

There's no denying that cameras carry risk. But cameras also help establish truth. They can stand witness to the crimes and violence police routinely deny and push back against their constant gaslighting
Thank you W for trusting me with your story. I hope you're healing well

Thank you also to Anonymous Comrade, as always, for the edits and wordsmithery
(also: thank you @hungrybowtie for the use of a screenshot from one of your awesome videos for the featured image. I'm obsessed with it)
It appears that, in my half-asleep stupor, I pasted the wrong link and now it's too late

If Medium asked you for money, try this link instead: it'll work better

It is that time of year where idealistic voters and pragmatic voters fight about who's destroying the country

Gonna do a thread about it
The idealistic voter sees their vote as an expression of their convictions. A chance to give the system feedback

An idealistic voter may vote for a third party candidate who closely aligns with their views, or not vote at all as a way to express their disapproval
A pragmatic voters sees their vote as a weapon to be used for larger ends. They may vote for a candidate they despise because they think the other one is worse, or because they think that candidate will move America closer to wherever they think it ought to go

Video from Chapman Square about 10 minutes ago from a source who prefers to remain anonymous

Heading down now
I have talked to one of the people who has taken it upon himself to clear the park

He tells me they found molotov cocktails and needles, and says he'll send proof

I'll keep you posted on that
Antifascist activists have showed up, along with several livestreamers. @Claudio_Report is here streaming

There are rumors that the people clearing the park are armed but I cannot confirm this

I am told they have already taken two vans of possessions away

Hi there, I am at the George Floyd memorial at Revolution Hall, where things are about to get underway. Maybe 150 people here

George Floyd would have been 47 years old today
This is, hopefully, gonna be a real mellow tweet thread about speeches and performances

I'm wearing regular clothes instead of a flak vest and kakhis. My dog is here. It feels nice

Hanging out with @JFlorencePDX as the night gets underway
The event opens with a prayer from a Black opera singer whose name I mjssed. An acknowledgement that the road is hard but a hope that we will see victory and triumph. For a people united

He then sings a beautiful rendition of the Black National Anthem (sound on)

Hi there, I'm here at the ICE building with maybe 20 protesters

A couple feds visible inside the gate but things seem extremely calm

I'll let y'all know if that changes
It changed. Apparently DHS felt the need to come out and wave their guns around so a Toyota Tacoma could exit the building
Surely the most dramatic footage of a goddamn Toyota truck ever taken

Words cannot describe how excited I am not to be coming to you live from 3rd and Alder where perhaps 60 chuds are...well, I walked up and was immediately threatened by a man with an AR-15 so you could say things are tense
The whatever -the-fuck-this-is has moved back to Chapman Square

Is this just how Sundays are now? This is the Lord's day, wonder how he feels about all this
A very heavily-armed crew. Multiple AR-15s, a ton of mace, I've seen sevwr paintball guns

Currently moving down Main St. Looks like they're going home. Good. I don't want to be here I want to be playing video games and feeling guilty about not writing

@suzettesmith is also here

@fastlerner wrote an incredible article for The Intercept about the immediate and lasting effects of the various types of gas we've all been exposed to--what we know, and what we don't

I feel so much less alone for reading it

theintercept.com/2020/10/10/por…
I was interviewed for this article, along with @JuniperLSimonis, @livkittykat, @Showmeurbeans, and
@MacSmiff. But obviously, we're far from the only people affected by this gas

If you went to protests in July especially, this article is about you
I didn't know what was wrong with me in August. I didn't know why I couldn't eat, why I was losing weight so fast. I thought it must be psychological

Or why I was getting horrible headaches when I've never had those before

I didn't know others were going through it too
