As a woman in AB politics, the single-minded focus of UCP issues managers on attacking, dogpiling, and degrading women who dare to speak up against their disastrous policies is so frustrating. It’s intentional intimidation to force strong progressive women out. #ableg
It’s misogynistic and hateful and PAID FOR WITH MY TAX DOLLARS. And it is unfortunately effective. I see my peers being doxxed and harassed, having their kids’ photos used in attacks against them, and yeah, that’s scary.
And if it’s scary for me, what about women with less privilege that I have to shield myself? We need those voices, and the Matts are showing them that if they engage, they will be abused forever. Who can blame anyone for choosing not to speak up?
I wish I had solutions. But I don’t. I self-censor on here to escape their notice. Because their online hate (again PAID FOR WITH MY TAX DOLLARS) and the way that it emboldens and radicalized their followers, is a safety risk.

Thread: Parents are worried. They’re worried about their kids. They’re worried about teachers. They’re worried about older relatives that kids might infect. Worried parents are not politics as usual. #ableg
And they have cause to be worried! Schools will be operating in crowded conditions that are effectively banned for anyone or anywhere else. There are, effectively, exceptions to safety precautions for schools.
And that decision seems to be based on early scientific understanding, which has since evolved. Kids get Covid. They spread Covid. And we don’t even really know what it can do to them long-term yet.

People like to talk about Albertans a lot. And when they do, they tend to have an idea in mind of what Albertan means. Who an Albertan is. Which, of course, is total BS. Alberta's like anywhere else: a geographical/economic/political space housing a collection of individuals.
It literally contains multitudes. There's no such thing as a "normal" Albertan. The climate deniers in these parts yell loudly (and crudely), and they fit a certain vision of what Albertans are, so they get a lot of airtime. But they're a drop in the bucket of Alberta.
I'm an Albertan, by choice. I grew up in Newfoundland. I came here ~15 years ago to go to law school. I moved out west with my then-boyfriend (now husband), who's from Ontario. We didn't intend to stay, but we grew to love Calgary.

Obviously, the election results on Tuesday were a real disappointment to me. But I’m more disappointed about a particular narrative that has emerged from the rubble.
That narrative is that this election proves that ‘namecalling’ and ‘negativity’ don’t work as political tactics.
The namecalling and negativity in question is calling candidates to account for bigoted statements and actions.
