Here we go again. Big Pharma continues to hold Canadians hostage with unfounded claims & threats like these.

A 🧵 on why statements like this are ultimately only rhetoric, not reality.

Canada ALREADY has some of the highest prices & highest rates of drug spending in the world.

We own the podium here.

Yet, countries that reign in prices much better than we do, German, the UK, Sweden, France, have more investment in R&D despite this.

(Yes, I can see you gesturing to Switzerland & the US. Hold on for 2 tweets.)

Yes, these countries have lower drug prices AND more direct R&D investment, despite the fact that Pharma keeps claiming they need high prices for high investment.

In Canada, it's a very different story: soaring revenue & sagging investment.

Prices are not linked to the level of R&D in a country, despite Pharma claims.

What is? Location of head offices, trial infrastructure and scientific clusters.

Not prices.

We’ve been here before. Pharma has been making these claims for decades. We've always caved.

This is just the latest in their attempt to prevent a fair deal for Canada.

Tweet @PattyHajdu & @PMPRB_CEPMB. Let them know we have their back. Follow legislators like @DonDavies who are pushing too.

Chins up & stiff spines. We can't afford to lose another fight with Big Pharma.

Should we use the Canada Health Act to reform long-term care?

A thread.

It has become blindingly clear that LTC requires massive change. The balance of evidence supports moving away from private, for-profit care in favour of public and private not-for-profit care. Of course, this isn't a silver bullet & many other reforms are needed.

But, we ignore the profit motive at our peril.

Where I differ from some, is in the use of the Canada Health Act to get us there.
