A thread on Devi Mahatmyam in relation to the vices which humans have cultivated and wish to overcome.
Durga Devi or the warrior Goddess is one of the fierce manifestations of Devi Adishakti who is responsible for the creation
and functioning of life within us.
Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmyam is a series of 700 slokas from Markandeya Purana which describes the victories and battles of Devi Adishakti.
The 13 Chapters from Markandeya Purana (74-86) describe the glory of Devi Adishakti as she vanquishes each asuras describing the various qualities within us that we wish to overcome.

1 Madhu Kaitabha Vadha
here Madhu symbolises sweetness or addiction and
Kaithabha symbolises bitterness and aversions. The emphasis here is on the importance of staying equanimous which is the first step towards higher pursuits of life.

2 Mahishasura sainya vadha
Devi destroys the forces who represent stubborness and inertia

3 Mahishasura vadha
4 Shakradhi stuthi
Devi worshiped by Indra and other deities

5 Dootasamvada
Conversation between Devi and an arrogant messenger from Shumbha (self conceit)

6 Dhumralochana vadha
Devi killing Dhumralochana (unclear or distorted perceptions)
7 Chanda Munda vadha
Both are commanders of Shumbha representing (anger) - Chanda
Munda - senselessness
The aspect of Devi who emerges victorious over chandamunda is worshiped as Chamunda

8 Raktabeeja vadha
9 Nishumbha vadha
10 Shumbha vadha
Shumbha mobilises his entire
army along with Raktabeeja
representing unquenched source of desire,
Nishumbha - self pity
The 3 chapters 8-10 describes how Devi vanquishes each of these asuras and emerge victorious over all negative tendencies.
11 Narayani Stuthi
The slokas praise Devi Narayani as the sole refuge of all Nara's or humans.

12 Bhagavathi vakyam
This chapter contains the blessings of Devi
13 Suratha Vaishya vara
Sage Markandeya completes his narration of how King Suratha and trader Samadhi get answers to their questions which arise due to being dejected with life situations.
