It would be nice if the persistent, state-sponsored initimdiation and harassment of the CCP’s targets- Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kong-ers, and Chinese dissidents- received even a quarter of the discussion that the frankly stupid line of questioning in Parliament this week received.
I don’t think it is hyperbolic to say that some people were in fact excited by these developments, and will even go so far as to misrepresent comments to provide a skewed picture that conforms to their narrative. See for example....
I do think it’s an example of Han privilege to blow this up into such a big deal when there are literally Uyghur families scared to comment on anything in public, much less appear at a Parliament inquiry
And you know who created that environment? The CCP. I condemn its harassment and intimidation of many people I know and many others I don’t, and hope all would agree.

Thoughts: I used to think that it was extremely unlikely that China would invade the democratic nation of Taiwan.
My thinking was the CCP is stupid but not suicidal, and that Taiwan was a ruse to give people a sense of nationalist purpose.
My thinking has however changed.
Part of the obsession with Taiwan is that obviously it's a much better place to live than China. That violates the entire national narrative of CCP rule being so so great. So there's a need to drag it down, an aggressive form of leveling, just like what we have seen in HK.
At the official level, Taiwan's general awesomeness is an embarrassment because obviously CCP rule sucks compared to Taiwan's system.
On a popular level, there is jealousy- it is not so much that Taiwan is a sacred piece of soil that needs to be recaptured...

A very creative way to distract from the fact that China has built a network of concentration camps holding millions andnis currently actively engaged in genocide via sterilization.
When you think about, it’s all language games, maaaaan... except it isn’t.
The deployment of “language games” to provide cover for oppressive power (usually “theirs” of course) is a major risk of contemporary theory. Lyotard addresses it well in the Differend, where he reflects on Holocaust denial.
Pan wants it to seem like he is analyzing a binary.
In reality he is building a binary, so as to undermine basic undeniable facts.

I am really shocked that there are still people who are naive about the CCP and the challenge that it presents to the world.
Imagine how the last few years will look in history books...
By 2017, it became apparent that the PRC had built a network of concentration camps holding
millions of Uyghurs in indefinite captivity. That same year, the country’s first Nobel Laureate died prematurely in prison, with no mourning allowed.
In late 2019, the government actively covered up a virus spreading in the city of Wuhan. It eventually spread around the world as a result, infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands (or more?)
