This weekend’s cake is Nusskuchen (nut cake—hazelnut in this case). It’s one of my ultimate home comfort cakes.
Ok, so here’s the recipe ...
300g soft butter
250g sugar
a little cinnamon
6 eggs (M)
1 tsp of baking powder
180g plain white flour
400g ground hazelnut
icing sugar for dusting ...
... Butter into bowl; use electric mixer to combine it with the suger; then add one egg at a time, mixing each in at high speed for half a minute. Mix hazelnut, flour, baking powder and a little cinnamon; add to butter mix in two goes, mixing at medium speed. ...
Unlike Johnson’s Brexit deal, the mixture is now oven ready. Spoon into cake tin.

Standard oven: 180 degrees
Fan oven: 160 degrees

Bake for approx 50 mins.

Dust with icing suger when cooled. You can also use a chocolate glaze—that’s really nice to.
*too not to.

Was talking to my father earlier and he was telling me that in Bielefeld, my hometown, #Covid restrictions are being tightened. That’s because the 7-day rate of new cases per 100k people has reached 43. Action taken immediately. And this is the level of detail reported every day.
Meanwhile in England, the case rate per 100k is in multiple hundreds in some places and still the response is muddled, not based on the scientific advice, and test & trace is an absolute disaster. We endured a tight lockdown to help protect lives and the NHS, but also to ...
... buy the UK Government time. They had one job: to get test & trace right. Not only did they fail, they splashed out billions to their mates in the process—this will go down in history as an abysmal case of unfettered corruption, one that jeopardised the health of the nation.

It’s #WorldMentalHealthDay I’ve been thinking a lot about all that has happened over last 4+ years. With news focused on negotiations and deals, it’s easy to forget the human aspect—one that shows that Brexit also triggered a mental health crisis. Fallout will continue. [Thread]
The situation of EU citizens is one example. As a recent survey I did showed, many feel very anxious and stressed. I had assumed that I would see such feelings come through in the survey, but I hadn’t quite anticipated that they would be as common as they turned out to be.
But then a 4+ year rollercoaster ride about your rights in your home ... it’s definitely not a joyride. Especially as issues continue. Uncertainty for all this time, a real loss of a sense of belonging—these are serious issues and they affect young and old.

Apfelkuchen (apple cake) with a glaze made from @PerthshirePrese bramble conserve.
Ok, recipe ... if you can read German it’s easy:
Short version in English:
Peel 750g of apples, half them and take the core out. Then cut thinly, but don’t quite cut all the way through—keeps the shape in place more nicely.
Melt 25g of butter.
Put both to the side.

Today the BMA has urged the Govt to implement stricter mask-wearing rules, incl outside where two-metre distancing is not possible. At my local market that’s been happening for months. We can do it. My mask helps protect you—please can you wear one to help protect me. #wearamask
For those asking about the pattern, see below. Been using it since April after testing many. New mask version 3 that I’m just making includes a layer of polypropylene non-woven fabric interfacing as polypropylene is recommended by WHO as good material. 😷…

Like @the3million, I have been talking a lot about the need for physical proof of status for EU citizens. Going digital-only overnight is beyond irresponsible. I hope the Lords will support an amendment tomorrow to pave the way for a physical document as backup. It's vital.
Checking settled status is a process that involves several steps both for EU citizens like Estelle and those who need to check their status. To introduce this as a digital-only system overnight is bound to cause significant problems.
Not to offer physical proof of status is seriously detrimental. Discrimination is already happenig, as Magda experienced.

RE recipe: watch this and you get the basic idea. That’s not quite how I make them though. Differences are: I use savoy cabbage (much nicer); I don’t put bread into the mince meat mix—it’s commonly done in Germany, but I’ve never understood the point;
