“A Military 1st: A Supercarrier Is Named After An African American Sailor... Doris Miller, who went by ‘Dorie’ in the Navy, was one of the first American heroes of World War II.” npr.org/2020/09/29/917…
“During the attack on Pearl Harbor, as his battleship, the USS West Virginia, was sinking, the powerfully built Miller, who was the ship's boxing champion, helped move his dying captain... then jumped behind a machine gun & shot at Japanese planes until his ammunition was gone.”
“As a Black sailor in 1941, he wasn't supposed to fire a gun even. This means that when he reached for that weapon, he was taking on two enemies: the Japanese flyers and the pervasive discrimination in his own country.”

1) A useful reference point: Holocaust distortion “refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes.” ushmm.org/m/pdfs/2008022…
2) “Negationism, by contrast, is not a reexamination of established facts or a well-founded critique of prior interpretations; rather, it is a more-or-less explicit attempt to deny the Holocaust.”
3) “Negationism is defined as the denial that the Holocaust took place and/or the denial of participation of significant numbers of members of one’s own nation in its perpetration. The negation may be outright and universal or deflective and particularistic.”

Posted this last night. Still think it’s important. When someone dies scared & alone, I have always felt the need to learn about them personally. To educate myself. That way they’re not alone.

You’re there with them. Honoring them the best you can. Remembering their last moment.
My grandfather’s crew mate in WWII, the waist gunner, was captured on the ground after they were shot down. A sweet kid from Maine. He loved baseball. The Germans lashed him to a barn door with leather straps. And they beat him to death with rifle butts.
His name was Herbert Campbell. And when the American OSS found his body, the predecessor to the CIA, there was nothing left of his skull except pieces the size of a nickel. I know because I found the JAG war crime report, and had to explain it to the last surviving crew member.

My boy Rudy has a big day tomorrow. Tried to sit with him, he always feels cornered. He’s shifty - a rescue :)

Worried about him. Please send him your best. He’s a very good boy. My best friend since age 28. Image
Rudy’s doing well folks. Removed 2 teeth, an abscess, 2 growths near the eye, & got a biopsy of another mass in his chest.

My other dog Finn decided to stop walking well this morning. So, I’m at the vet now & hopefully soon taking both of them home! Roller coaster of a day. Image
We adore our boys & our vet - Adams Mill in Great Falls. Worth an hour drive each way.

Not sure I needed Rudy’s actual teeth as souvenirs though! What in the world do I do with these! Bury them???

Our vet suggested making a necklace. I choked on my mask. I’ll spare you the pic.

“Witnesses placed Luksa-Daumantas, a leader of the pro-Nazi Lithuanian Activist Front militia during World War II, at the 1941 Lietukis Garage massacre in Kaunas, where locals tortured and beat to death dozens of Jews.”
The Kaunas pogrom was a massacre of Jews living in Kaunas, Lithuania, that took place on June 25–29, 1941 – the first days of the Operation Barbarossa and of Nazi occupation of Lithuania. Here is one man who personally killed many Jews with a pipe. Known as “The Death Dealer.” Image
Notice the crowd of onlookers in the background.

Talking. Spectators. Not interceding. Image

“Redeeming a Holocaust Survivor’s reputation. Cecelia ‘Cilka’ Klein... was the subject of a Holocaust sex & romance novel by an Australian novelist named Heather Morris. [Her stepson] found the portrayal of his Jewish stepmother highly objectionable.” sdjewishworld.com/2020/06/18/red… Image
Valuable background: “Sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz branded ‘lurid and titillating’ by survivor’s stepson. George Kovach also called Heather Morris’s Cilka’s Journey, which is based on his stepmother Cecilia’s life, ‘appalling & extremely hurtful’” theguardian.com/books/2019/oct…
And this:

“The fabulist of Auschwitz: Heather Morris’s bestselling novels ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ and ‘Cilka’s Journey’, and the problem of truth in historical fiction.” themonthly.com.au/issue/2020/feb…
