This is what continuing colonialism & systemic racism look like in everyday practice, while the rcmp *watch* &, unsurprisingly, things spiral out of control

“Non-natives [white fishermen] removing lobster traps set by Indigenous fishermen in western N.S.”…
We’ve watched in real-time this “ugly confrontations over a First Nation's commercial lobster fishing operation”, ignorance over treaty rights, rcmp inaction fuelling downward spiral.

“Lobster protests: Nova Scotia RCMP arrest two at wharf in Weymouth”…
Whose accountable for inaction?

The dispute over lobster fishing in Nova Scotia is now totally out of control:

“things got completely out of control after non-Indigenous fishermen trapped two Mi'kmaw fishermen inside a lobster pound and burned their van”…
RCMP Commissioner, as too-many politicians, fail/refuse to understand systemic injustice. It’s on them to learn. Racial illiteracy means things fall apart.👇🏿

Van torched, lobsters destroyed as mob surrounds Mi’kmaw lobster pounds in Nova Scotia @APTNNews…
This is *not* a “both sides” equivalency. Politicians, police, media framing failed to defend treaty rights, oppose vigilantism

Tempers ignite in lobster fishery dispute between Indigenous, non-Indigenous fishers in Southwest Nova Scotia, @chronicleherald…
When things fall apart, vigilantism emboldened, racial violence ensues

Understatement: “RCMP say blaze is suspicious; man in hospital with life-threatening injuries”

Fire destroys lobster facility in southwest Nova Scotia amid escalating fishery tensions…
In plain sight, real-time, inaction:

“The fire capped a week of rising tensions over a treaty right to a self-regulated Indigenous fishery in the province”

Fire destroys lobster pound in Nova Scotia, police say man in hospital with injuries, @TorontoStar…
Racial literacy reqs understanding the role of systems/institutions in ‘law and dis/order’:

“RCMP response under scrutiny

Coulstring and Marr were critical of the RCMP response on Tuesday night...officers didn't respond for two hours after being called”…
Canadian universities, colleges, universities, schools should be leading efforts to address racisms.

Response isn’t, but I know smart, decent rcmp. Of course that’s true. This isn’t solely about individual or interpersonal racism, or “a few bad apples”
Learned helplessness: where are the leaders willing/able to confront colonial legacies? We’ve seen the statements, inquiries, commissions, apologies. We need action. Not only on systemic racism, but on decolonizing Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations…
This isn’t Trump’s America. #ThisIsCanada, where Court upheld Indigenous treaty rights are well-estab. How many more examples do we need before action? We need better-equipped leaders at decision-making tables who take accountability for mis-educ/inaction
Dear MP @AndyFilmorehfx
Euphemisms hide injustice. Racial violence against Indigenous peoples exercising treaty rights, fire bombing vehicles/building are not “tensions”. Wrong “t-word”:

“Statement on the ongoing tensions in Nova Scotia’s lobster fishery”
Letter by @SenSincmurr to Justin Trudeau, Bill Blair, David Lametti, Carolyn Bennett, Marc Miller & Bernadette Jordan demanding protection of treaty rights; indicating intent to assist the victims in filing a complaint via the Civilian Review & Complaints Commission for the RCMP.
“The RCMP understands what the issue here is. We don’t see it as a police issue. We understand *both sides*. We understand the passion [violence?] and what they’re bringing to the table, and we respect that.”—@RCMPNS spokesperson taking sides against law/treaty rights.
Recall from Sept: far-right racist mob beat up antiracism organizers & protestors in Red Deer, AB. The RCMP watched, later said it didn’t want to “take sides”. Racism is a “side”?

See video: Red Deer RCMP criticized for inaction at an anti-racism rally”
The RCMP’s leadership, as rank & file, seem ill-equipped to combat racist violence. What’s more troubling is leadership failure to take action to address racial illiteracy.

“The RCMP’s atrocious response to racism in Alberta” #SystemicRacism @globeandmail…
Compare this Pomona, AB RCMP’s response to a known hate group breaking up an antiracism rally, beating up people. Racial illiteracy informs ugly moral equivalency.

“are you suggesting one side's voice is more important than the others? Because it's not.”
Mi'kmaw journalist assesses media coverage of fisheries dispute | @CBCNews:

@APTNNews journalist Trina Roache spoke with CBC's Mainstreet about reporting on Mi'kmaw fishery”.…

On memory & forgetfulness: I’ve studied or lived through the rise & fall of many statutes, monuments, walls, etc. Ask: who & what do these represent then & now? “History” isn’t singular, not static.

Falling Down: History's Toppled Statues And Monuments…
2) Toppling Monuments, a Visual History. @nytimes:

“History is littered with the shattered remains of toppled statues, and more are toppling now in the American South”…

On being “a Karen” (don’t)
#Karen understands her social position/power w/in systemic racism.Vidéos show how pwr operates in realtime

‘I will call the cops!’ White woman threatens to call police on Black man for blowing leaves…

“Karens” understand threat—calling police on Black ppl, —see it as institution for preserving social power, privilege, comfort.

Black family says white woman called police over dispute about their right to build a patio. #Karen…

Cell phone videos capture today the ugliness of everyday racism and the ubiquitous use of the n-word by “Karens”.
Black folks long shared these stories & often encountered disbelief, denial, by too-many white folks, still. Unlearning racism will be hard👇🏿
