As #WIAnes20 wraps up, I cannot tell you how much these smiling faces have rejuvenated me over the last few hours. What an honor to present @rekhakuttikat with the Distinguished Service Award.

A 🧵 of my remarks as the outgoing President of @womenMDinanesth
WIA is dedicated to all issues related to gender equity in anesthesiology, & that means supporting your professional development & advocating on your behalf. Thank you to @EdwardsLifesci for your support and all of YOU donors! TY, @EbonyJHilton_MD for speaking to us.
Your support helps us
✅ narrow the pay gap
✅ connect women anesthesiologists everywhere
✅ promote women leaders
✅throw our full support behind women anesthesiologists of intersectional identities: BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQ, or any other marginalized group. Now is your time.
2020 has hit us especially hard. As "#HealthcareHeroes" (& often parents), we have learned to put on a brave face and repress our emotions to get the job done. Feelings of anger & betrayal, grief & loneliness, of exhaustion to the point of ill health. How long do we hold this in?
We carry
- anger at hospital leaders & politicians who lied to us about #PPE & protections
- betrayal from working so hard to save lives only to receive pay cuts & job losses
- grief and powerlessness at witnessing needless death & injustice
- loss over the small things that really are big: hugs, milestones, travel, dining, visiting dear family members
- disappointment in spouses not stepping up as we plunged into being the school, nanny, caregiver, medical officer and chef, with no one to look after *us*
This isn't meant to bring you down, but rather I believe that if we are to transform our situations after this into something better for ourselves and those around us, it's important to first name - and explore - what is happening.
So what is my vision for women anesthesiologists? I do think there’s hope. All of us will learn from what we’ve witnessed. We will learn, most of all, that we have value, we are the engine that keeps the hospitals & our homes running. They couldn’t function without us. #WIAnes20
And with that value comes power. Women are observing good leadership & bad leadership in times of great crisis. We are teaching ourselves how we want to lead, and will be taking over leadership positions (well-negotiated ones, too) in spades. #WIAnes20
Work will look different, and administrative, non-clinical tasks can be completed from home – or the beach. We will finally prioritize coming to work healthy. We will band together, defend each other, and fight for equality, not just for women but for all people. #WIAnes20
I know right now we are all feeling isolated, but I am telling you, it will end. We know one of the strongest protectors against burnout is real connections with peers and patients. So this is what I ask of you – take one small initiative to reach out. #WIAnes20
If you really want to foster community & deepen your relationships, think of a friend of yours. Do they struggle with something you will never understand or experience? Maybe it’s racism, maybe it’s having a special needs child, maybe it’s coming as an immigrant to your country.
Here’s my challenge for you – learn something about your friend that you would personally never have to care about– take up advocacy for their struggles, and walk forward in time with them. It is only by connecting together that we overcome. #WIAnes20
The last thing I want to say is that if the early 1920’s taught us anything about how to recover from a global pandemic and mass isolation, it's that we need to prepare for an EPIC PARTY. 🎉 #WIAnes20
Folks, this will end. We will party again, we will hug, we will travel, we will see friends, we will care for our patients without barriers of PPE. I want you TODAY to prepare for the party, to think about that which gives you joy,& start planning now to make it happen. #WIAnes20
I cannot tell you how excited I am for @ebmalinzakMD to take the reins of @womenMDinanesth . She has proven over and over that she is capable, caring, thoughtful and a strong advocate for women anesthesiologists & patients. I so look up to her and can’t wait to follow her lead./
