For decades, doctors have encouraged people to consume plenty of calcium, a mineral best known for building strong bones. About 43% of people in the US, including close to 70% of older women, take supplements that contain calcium. #calcium #MedTwitter #cardiotwitter #ASCVD
Concern about osteoporosis—the bone-weakening disease that leaves older adults prone to fracturing a hip, wrist, or other bone—has driven this trend. With regard to heart disease, though, there's one potentially confusing aspect of the calcium story.#CVD
A test researchers often use to look for early signs of heart disease is known as a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan. There's no direct connection between the calcium you consume and the amount in your arteries.#Coronarycalcium
But in recent years, several studies have observed a link between the use of calcium supplements and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease but this is more likely due to the fact that both osteoporosis and cardiac disease are commonly found together ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
A comprehensive analysis that pooled findings from 31 studies of calcium intake and CVD, published in Oct 2016 in Annals of Internal Medicine, found no cause for concern. Moreover, the RCTs of calcium supplements, with or without vitamin D, did not show a link to heart disease.
Osteoporosis and CVD have many shared risk factors- smoking/lack of physical activity/unhealthy diet. Women who have osteoporosis or its predecessor, osteopenia, are typically advised to take calcium supplements. These women may also be more likely to have heart disease as well.
For adults, the recommended daily intake of calcium is 1,000mg up to age 50. That amount increases to 1,200 mg per day for women over 50 and men older than 70. Most people can meet that requirement with about three daily servings of calcium-rich foods.
A coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan uses a CT scan that takes multiple pictures of the heart in thin sections. These so-called calcifications are an early sign of atherosclerosis, the fatty buildup on the inner walls of arteries that is responsible for many heart attacks/strokes
Although calcium is part of that fatty buildup, dietary calcium has no role. In fact, in a study of more than 2,700 adults followed for 10 years, a higher intake of calcium was linked to a lower risk of atherosclerosis—especially if the calcium came from food sources.
Women's Health Initiative study that - compared women who took daily 1,000mg calcium supplements with those who took a placebo. After a 7y follow-up, the CAC scores were nearly identical in both groups.
To conclude - calcium supplements do not increase risk of blockages or heart attacks. It's preferable to obtain calcium naturally from food sources. But when indicated in osteoporosis or pts on hormonal therapy for various reasons including cancer, supplements can safely be taken

Endothelium is basically the inner lining of your blood vessels. A normal endothelium prevents clot formation by various cellular mechanisms and promotes smooth flow of blood. study.com/academy/lesson…
Endothelial dysfunction leads to atherosclerosis meaning blockages due to fat deposition and inflammation in the inner lining of the blood vessel wall (much like deposits in an old pipe causing block in flow of water).

High LDL or bad cholesterol and a strong family history of heart attacks and bypass surgeries and angioplasties - I recommended statins. The patient said the cholesterol theory is a hoax and statins are dangerous. Argued and left my Opd and gave this feedback. #statins #LDL
A few months later he was rushed to emergency with a heart attack and blockages which needed angioplasty and two stents. One 100% and one 80% in major arteries. Survived and gave this feedback. #heartattack #Blockage #angioplasty #stentssavelives
High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart attacks and coronary artery disease. Especially LDL or bad cholesterol. There is a huge volume of data and studies which confirm this. Obesity, Diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking are other risk factors. Of course genetics too.

Light is considered as a symbol of auspiciousness, prosperity and abundance in the Hindu religion. Light brings brightness with it and removes the darkness. Light makes it possible to see things clearly. Lamp (Deep) is a part of various traditions and cultures. #lamp #deepa
In almost every Indian home across the rural-urban divide, a lamp is lit daily in relation to sacred or secular domains of culture. Following Shloka can be recited while lighting the lamp. This prayer is also known "Deepa shlokam" , "Deep Vandana" or "Deepa Jyoti Mantra".
The light emanating from the lamp removes darkness, ignorance and evil. The light or knowledge shows us the way out of our problems, fears, tensions, and unhappiness. The light of a lamp is believed to bring in prosperity, as knowledge or wisdom is the greatest form of wealth.
