#LandBack thread for settler comrades.

In the face of outright state, corporate & vigilante settler violence happening against Indigenous nations across these lands, here are some ways we can educate ourselves & networks and show up for various frontline Indigenous struggles

In 1700's, the Mi’kmaq signed Peace and Friendship Treaties, which included "free liberty of Hunting & Fishing as usual.” In 1999, under colonial law, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld these very treaty rights.
Court affirmed treaty rights of Mi'kmaq & Wolastoqiyik nations to hunt, fish, gather for "moderate livelihood"; moderate livelihood fisheries licenses emerged in this context. Canada has yet to implement decision & uphold Mi’kmaq nation's self-determination & self-regulation.
Sipekne’katik First Nation is first band to start own Moderate Livelihood fishery. They have 7 licenses, but only 3 are being used, totaling 150 traps - in comparison to 390,000 commercial traps in area. Settler fishers are right now openly assaulting and terrorizing Mi’kmaq ppl

Coastal GasLink/TC Energy is pushing 670-km fracked gas pipeline that would carry fracked gas from Dawson Creek to Kitimat. LNG Canada is the single largest private investment in Canadian history. All five clans of Wet’suwet’en nation has opposed the pipeline
Last week, CGL called in RCMP to try & remove Wet’suwet’en women as they hold ceremony at proposed drill site. In coming weeks, CGL will be drilling under Wedzin Kwa (Morice River).

And finally, about #moosemoratorium

Algonquins of Barriere Lake and Kitigan Zibi are demanding that Quebec halt sports moose hunting in their territories. Algonquins continue to impacted by the decline of moose and are now enforcing own moratorium on sports moose hunting.
There are a number of checkpoints now set up through the territory, on junctions off Highway 117 in Quebec. Settler hunters have been shooting community signs, driving through the checkpoints, and leaving moose body parts around the camps.

Hope this brief compilation helps settler folks get informed. Indigenous lands are being desecrated; Indigenous economies are being destroyed; Indigenous resources are being extracted; Indigenous land defenders are being criminalized. This is ongoing genocide, not reconciliation
It is our responsibility to share information, show up, respond to calls to action, disrupt complacency, and refuse to participate in colonial violence.

RT: #Wetsuweten Press Release

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs met with the Mohawk People of Tyendinaga at the Council House in Tyendinaga to discuss the path forward for the Wet’suwet’en people to be able to end the illegal occupation of the RCMP and CGL on their lands.
Contrary to announcement by BC RCMP they are withdrawing from Wet’suwet’en, BC RCMP & CIRG have increased harassment, made illegal arrests, increased surveillance, and monitoring of Wet’suwet’en and invited guests. This is completely unacceptable and far from show of good faith
We remain deeply concerned by the myriad of laws that Canada has broken including Wet’suwet’en law, the Canadian Constitution, UNDRIP, and the Geneva Convention on Genocide.

Thread and personal history about #WetsuwetenStrong

Ten years ago, around exactly this time, I realized how deep #Wetsuweten land defenders roll.

This time, 10 years ago, was Feb 2010 Anti-Olympics Convergence, organized under banner of "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land."
For years in leadup, organizers in city connected w/ land defenders esp in Stat'imc and Secwepemc territories fighting Olympics-related infrastructure on their land. Residents and organizers in Vancouver were fighting gentrification, homelessness, privatization, and surveillance
There was potent movement, that spread across country, including dousing Olympic torch and Blocking the spirit train and days of mass disruption. While some were busy praising the 'green' Olympics and others were criticizing the radical tactics of anti-Olympics organizers,

A thread about #Wetusweten -

I first met Wet'suwet'en land defenders in 2009 and firmly believe @UnistotenCamp is one of the most courageous, visionary, uncompromising and generative struggles of our time.
@UnistotenCamp Unist'ot'en has been painstakingly re-occuping their lands, asserting their jurisdiction, vitalizing food and medicinal sovereignty, healing their community, and governing through their hereditary clan and feast system.
@UnistotenCamp I have had the honour of witnessing the beauty of Talbits Kwah at Gosnell Creek and Wedzin Kwah, been gifted with stories by elders, been enriched by the words and teachings of land defenders - like thinking through the framework of law as responsibilities instead of rights.

So much of what is happening to and around Jagmeet Singh is (appropriately) named as racism, but fails to tend to the specific context of being Sikh especially on the west coast where he is now an MP.

A thread: (1/7)
Sikh history on the west coast is rooted in revolutionary legacy of Ghadr martyrs (such as Bhai Bhag Singh & Mewa Singh, who was executed by the Canadian state for assassinating immigration inspector Williams C. Hopkinson). They are the rarely told history behind Komagata Maru.
Sikh history on the west coast is rooted in working class movements such as Canadian Farm Workers Union led by Punjabi farm workers connected to Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers union. The labor movement owes a debt to Punjabi women who waged wildcat Money's Mushroom strike.

Media outlets and journalists like @globeandmail @EvanDyerCBC @TerryGlavin @jonkay @ChantalHbert have only strengthened the findings of NI #MMIWG #MMIWG2S report and the TRC that media plays an immense role in shaping negative stereotypes of Indigenous people esp women/2S ppl
To debate Inquiry's finding of genocide is to actively undermine the legitimacy of the Inquiry. Most Canadians won't read whole Inquiry report and, as journalists, u have power to make ethical choices: to comment on substantive nature of findings or fuel clickbait controversy
It is undebatable that Inquiry finds Canada in violation of SEVEN international human rights instruments; violation of Charter; violation of treaty obligations; violation of inherent Indigenous rights; violation of domestic human rights Codes. Why not name and emphasize that?

Continuing.. Summary thread on NI #MMIWG #MMIWG2S Report

24. As holders of First Nations, Métis, Inuit rights, there are Indigenous & human rights violations in 4 areas: right to culture, health, security, justice. These rights based on foundational right to self-determination
25. Right to culture: Attacks on culture thru residential schools & ixties Scoop, disenfranchisement thru Indian Act, child welfare. For Inuit, added impacts of mass centralization & relocation. For 2SLGBTQQIA ppl, there is shift from the value of gender-diverse people.
26. Canada uses child welfare to oppress, displace, disrupt & destroy Indigenous families and nations. It is genocidal tool that violates Indigenous rights to govern, is violence against families, disrupts connections, and is linked to violence against Indigenous women & girls
