What standard of proof should apply to the Hunter Biden laptop story? GOP, conservatives should avoid falling into a trap--call it the 'can't prove untrue' trap--that Dems, media fell into with dossier. 1/10 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/byron-…
When Buzzfeed dumped entire dossier on web in January 2017, all could see it was preposterous. But who could say for absolute sure? New book OBSESSION reports Trump transition team's reaction to publication: 2/10 amazon.com/Obsession-Insi… ImageImage
Now, imagine if Biden campaign took similar approach to Hunter Biden laptop story. They could address a few threshold questions like: Is the laptop Hunter Biden's? Did he drop it off at a repair shop and then fail to retrieve it? 3/10
Then journalists could try to verify the story. Some are doing that right now. But many are instead trying to knock it down, suggesting without evidence that it is Russian disinformation, or focusing on staff tiffs at New York Post. 4/10
But think back to dossier. Journalists tried very hard to verify it. So did FBI. They failed. Then Dems, media allies adopted new standard: It must be true because it had not definitively been proven untrue. 5/10
'Not a single revelation in the Steele dossier has been refuted,' said Feinstein. 'Nothing in the (Trump) dossier... has been shown to be false,' said Tribe. 'The dossier has not been proven false,' said MSNBC's Wallace. 6/10
On 'Meet the Press,' Chuck Todd to former CIA director John Brennan: 'So far with this dossier, nothing has yet been proven untrue. How significant is that? Brennan: 'Just because they were unverified does not mean they were not true.' 7/10
It was the wrong standard to apply to the dossier, to the journalists' everlasting discredit. Now, it is the wrong standard to apply to the Hunter Biden emails. 8/10
It's not fair Hunter Biden email story must be true because it has not been proven false. Rather, job is to try to find what evidence supports it and what does not. Fox News has already made some progress on that front. 9/10
But more work needs to be done. Don't look for any help from media organizations trying to kill the story. But for other, more traditionally open-minded journalists, it's an important job at an important moment. 10/10 End. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/byron-…

THREAD Washington Post does story with headline, 'Trump quotes Putin condemning American democracy, praises autocrat Orban.' Raises question: OK, what did Trump say? 1/12 washingtonpost.com/elections/2023…

Put aside Orban. After all, the US political system did not convulse for years over Viktor Orban, as it did over Putin. So what did Trump say about Putin? 2/12
First graf of Post story says Trump's words, in campaign speech in New Hampshire, were 'part of an ongoing effort to deflect from his criminal prosecutions and spin alarms about eroding democracy against President Biden.' 3/12

A new study of trans in America. Big majorities have not used hormone treatments, not had surgery. Big majorities prefer *not* to be called 'trans woman' or 'trans man.' (Prefer 'nonbinary' or 'gender non-conforming.') 1/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/a-new-…
Total number: Slightly less than one half of one percent of US population. Of that small number, 70 percent do not present themselves in public as trans all the time. Sometimes do, sometimes don't. 2/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/a-new-…
What to make of it? First the trans industry needs to hit brakes on life-altering, irreversible procedures--surgery, puberty-blocking hormones--on minors. 3/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/a-new-…

Chinese balloon story getting more troubling tonight. WSJ, others reporting that Biden administration now says earlier, Trump-era Chinese balloon incursions happened, but nobody in US government knew about them at the time. 1/4 wsj.com/articles/biden…
Story, as told in WSJ, is that Biden officials 'pieced together' what happened later. So Trump administration veterans are telling truth when they say they never knew of such things, because the Biden team figured it all out later. 2/4 wsj.com/articles/biden…
For that to be true, one has to believe that US government missed these huge balloons over the US. Did that really happen? Seems hard to believe. Or did military spot them but not inform civilian leadership? Seems harder to believe. 3/4

Big news last August when Adam Schiff, Dems asked Intelligence Community for 'damage assessment' of Trump classified documents case. Show the terrible harm Trump has done to national security! So now, months later, has anyone seen the assessment? 1/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/whatev…
Answer: No. 'We have not been briefed,' says House Intel member. 'I'm still waiting,' says Senate intel chair Warner. 'Damage assessment' nowhere to be found. 2/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/whatev…
IC silence leading to theories. 'If there had been something significant it would have been briefed and leaked by now,' said one Hill source. Warner seems to think he's getting the runaround. 3/5 washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/whatev…

Several headlines tonight along lines of 'U.S. May Execute Its First Openly Transgender Woman.' Missouri prisoner was convicted of killing 'former girlfriend.' Journalists straining to avoid saying that killer, Scott McLaughlin, was a man at time of 2003 murder. 1/4
In prison, Scott McLaughlin was mentored by another murderer, James Hicklin, who successfully sued state of Missouri to force it to pay for transgender hormone treatment. James Hicklin now goes by name Jessica. 2/4 apnews.com/article/legal-…
Three years ago, Scott McLaughlin began taxpayer-funded transition. Now goes by name Amber. Among other arguments, last-minute petition for clemency says Scott McLaughlin suffered from gender dysphoria. 3/4

On Republicans joining J6 Committee: One thing McCarthy feared was that committee leadership would keep GOP members in dark about what was going on. So now, look at this episode from @DraperRobert piece in NYT: 1/4 nytimes.com/2022/12/23/mag…
@DraperRobert Late June. Cheney has gotten explosive, revised testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson. Members don't know what is going on. Cheney & Thompson summon them to SCIF for hush-hush meeting on June 28. 2/4 nytimes.com/2022/12/23/mag…
@DraperRobert Cheney & Thompson tell J6 members: We've got something big. There's a hearing in three hours. Here's the script. That afternoon, the show went on. 3/4
