@UniLeiden In November I will attempt to share one tip a day about online learning, hybrid learning and blended learning as provided by the teams of @ICLONLeiden and @C4Innovation and others. Contact your Faculty Teaching Support Desks for assistance!
The tip of November 2nd: manage expectations of your students and yourself. Not everything needs to be perfect, nor will it be. Some occassional technical hiccups are inevitable for instance. What is important is to be as clear as possible. teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/conne…
Something upbeat for Nov 3rd: share this video with your students to help them organize themselves. h/t to our mediateam @C4Innovation
Tip for Nov 4, thinking big: you don't need a complete media team to create videos. You can go DIY with our video toolkit, and ask support from the Teacher Support Desk for hardware. Why not reuse your material later for a MOOC? staff.universiteitleiden.nl/vr/video-toolk…
Tip for nov 5: Why create something new, when somebody else has already done so and you are allowed to use it? It is just like assigning a readinglist to your class. teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/using…
Tip for Nov 6: A lovely day, the 25th birthday of my eldest. I'd like to spread the love around. You can always message me and ask for a virtual coffee in Teams. I'd love to meet you and help improve your course, your conference, your community!
I was a bit preoccupied, so this is the tip for Nov 7: Consider to offer most of your online material asynchronous, concentrating live sessions on discussing with students. teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/onlin…
Tip for Nov 8, Exclusive for Leiden DIY video makers: you can ask access to animation maker PowToon here fd24.formdesk.com/universiteitle…
A bright new week, and a tip for Nov 9: if you improve the inclusivity of your course, that benefits ALL your online students. So make sure to provide captions to videos for instance, which you can do in your course channel on Kaltura. teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/acces…
Misty Morning. Tip for Nov 10: roleplaying and simulations can deepen a student's understanding of concepts & processes in fields like politics, governance, security, history and archaeology. Yes, you can do that online. #seriousgamesteachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/simul…
Tip for Nov 11: a lot about online learning is about the social presence of the learning experience. You can learn about creating a learning community in my free self study training Build Your Own Online Community rise.articulate.com/share/ZHgJ89iN…
Tip for Nov 12: in addition to my community training, I've recently created the all new free self study training Moderate Your Online Community, aimed at support staff. rise.articulate.com/share/mb0710O3…
Tip for Friday the 13th of Nov: students might find this intimidating, but your course will really improve if you can introduce discussions, live, but also in forums/chats (aka asynchronous), it will deepen understanding if you can learn to talk about it . teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/discu…
Tip for 15 Nov: Are you running into the limits of attendees for Kaltura or Teams? Check out MS Live Events which can comfortably host up to 10.000 participants, with a chat for interaction. Contact ISSC to request. teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/micro…
Tip for 16 Nov: Keep a smile on your face, thinking of old innovations that were once implemented. This was shared with me: the medieval helpdesk.
Tip for 18 Nov: each faculty has in some shape or form a Teacher support desk, be that ECOLe, Flow, SEEDS, SOLO or otherwise. Check out who you can count on for support teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl/articles/suppo…
Running behind and also want to cover for the weekend, so you are getting a little batch of videos for the coming days, to watch at your leisure (Leiden staff only). Tip for 19 Nov: @koryoinleiden and @JoasiaBNL discuss educational podcasting video.leidenuniv.nl/media/t/1_plwk…
Tip for 20 Nov: Roeland van Rijst @ICLONLeiden demonstrates some interesting techniques to ensure discussions in your live sessions, in this webinar "Online instruction for workgroups and discussions" video.leidenuniv.nl/media/t/1_ifwm…
Tip for 21 Nov: here is a classic from myself and Annemieke vd Bijllaardt. How do you start off your classes so your students are on board and engaged? Practical tips for making sure students know how to do online learning. video.leidenuniv.nl/media/t/1_xk41…
Tip for 25 Nov: Use the revised Taxonomy of Bloom to think of different activities & roles in your course. Here is a handy list of action verbs apu.edu/live_data/file…
Tip for 26 Nov: follow instructional designers and education researchers on Twitter. Follow-up tip 1 is Neil Mosley
Tip for 30 Nov: I thought I could avoid this, but please, *don't feed trolls*. If you are being challenged, consider that reacting gives your opponent a podium you might not want them to have. There are other things you can do, and please reach out to me if you want to know them.
Please know that your employer @UniLeiden has something to say about this if you ever encounter trolling or, heaven forbid, doxing. Ask for help, and make sure you protect yourself. Lock your account, block nasties.
My DM is open to anyone working in academia, but especially those at @UniLeiden who struggle with this. Please reach out, and we'll talk. There are ways of handling this that will leave you less stressed.

@UniLeiden@CarelStolker@C4Innovation On request I am doing a thread on online conferencing, with references. I might put that in a blog later. We are getting a ton of consultancy requests, especially by support staff, on this specific topic. #onlineconference 1/n
