The Federal Government yesterday agreed to ASUU’s demand to pay their members’ salary arrears from February to June through the old salary payment platform, pending when the university lecturers will complete the development of its own payment platform- (UTAS).

The Ministry of Labour and Employment disclosed this on Wednesday night.

THE Federal Government Thursday lamented that the continuous closure of Nigerian Universities as a result of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over the IPPIS has contributed to the ongoing #EndSARS protest.

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige stated this at a meeting with the leadership of ASUU over the union’s stiff opposition to the IPPIS payment platform.

Senator Ngige also debunked insinuation that the Federal Government was contemplating to replace the IPPIS platform with University Transparency Account System (UTAS), the platform that the university teachers have come up with against IPPIS.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the plan by the Federal Government to reopen public universities in the country.
Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of the union, who made this known during a news conference on Tuesday in Jos, said that the move could be “perilous’’.

Abubakar, who declared that ASUU was not in support of the plan, said that reopening of universities would further pose grave danger to students and it would be inimical to the fight against the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained that Nigerian universities may not be reopened even if the federal government orders the resumption of all schools amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, in an interview today also clarified his position on the reports that the union urged the government not to reopen schools until 2021.
