I hate Personal Statements. I just do!

It is the one document that in 99% of cases is either FAKE or over-dramatized.

The student knows that and the assessor knows that (bc he/she must 've written one before).

And Yet, we still pretend they really represent the candidate! 1/
Candidates always feel pressured to write an interesting narrative about how he/she were in love with medicine before birth or how an extreme adversarial experience transformed, not only their interests, but also their life. 2/
A good volume of the literature shows that personal statements have low predictive values for medical school performance. Below are just two systematic reviews that you may find interesting. 3/

If we continue to have them, Few Tips.

First, for applicants:

1. Nobody is interested in what you were at six years old or what your parents instilled in you. People are looking for your experience, skill set, potential contributions to the field, and career goals (PG>UG). 4/
2. You don't have to write an emotional story, but rather a sincere display of your enthusiasm for the field. i.e. Do NOT write a movie, Write an argument!
3. There are many examples for personal statements online.

How can you benefit from them? Here is how ⬇️

NEVER follow them! Do not copy content, Do not take ideas, Do not mimic the style, Just stay away!!
Finally a personal statement should answer three basic questions:

1. Why are you the most qualified candidate to join the program?

2. Why did you choose this program? and how does it fit your career goals?

3. And what is your plan going forward? 7/
And for Evaluation Committees:

Plz, for the LOVE of GOD, find an alternative way of assessment. 8/
