3/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Los Angeles (2/x)
In the last 21 days, Los Angeles has reported 3.5X as many cases as the next closest county (San Bernardino)
4/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Los Angeles (3/x)
Los Angeles County has reported nearly 6X as many cases as the next closest county (San Diego)
5/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Los Angeles (4/x)
For the week ending Jan 7th, Los Angeles County hospitals admitted nearly 3X as many COVID-19 patients as the next closest county (Orange)
It also had over 16K ED visits for COVID-19.
6/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Los Angeles (5/x)
Last note Los Angeles County: for the week ending Jan 7th, several hospitals admitted at least 3 children with COVID-19, and there’s an upward trend in pediatric hospitalizations.
And while the absolute number may not seem that high, it’s worth noting that
1 in 3 COVID-19 deaths in Ventura County have been reported in the last 3 weeks.
9/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Ventura Co (3/x)
Hospitalizations are rising even faster than in LA County — that’s problematic because Ventura Co. doesn’t have nearly as much hospital capacity:
🔸7 hospitals
🔸1 in 3 patients are COVID patients
10/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Oklahoma (1/x)
Big picture:
🔸Not enough testing
🔸1 out of every 4 tests are coming back (+)
🔸Case and deaths rates are going from worse —> worser
11/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Oklahoma (2/x)
Mobility (anonymous cell phone data) suggests:
🔸Summer was a free-for-all
🔸Folks buckled down late October
🔸Folks did NOT stay home for Christmas
Read: the current wave is likely due to holiday gatherings.
12/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Oklahoma (3/x)
🔸Case rate jumps on Jan 2nd and remains higher, which further argues that Christmas gatherings are driving the current wave
🔸In the last 3 wks, Oklahoma *County* is responsible for 1 out of every 6 cases in the state.
13/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Oklahoma (4/x)
I’m worried about the hospital situation.
🔸As of Jan 7, there were only 157 ICU beds available in the state
🔸1 in 5 hospital patients have COVID
14/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Richmond, VA (1/x)
State-level:
🔸Case rate is very high and rising
🔸Deaths high, but falling week-over-week
🔸Adequate testing — that’s good,
🔸Mobility shows increased activity for 12/24 (grocery stores) and 1/3 (parks)
15/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Richmond, VA (2/x)
Local level:
🔸Case rates in Henrico, Chesterfield, and Richmond City are high across the board, and rising
🔸Deaths are stable (silver lining)
16/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Richmond, VA (3/x)
Local level (cont.):
🔸Alarming that pediatric hospitalizations are rising so quickly. Some of that has to do w/ patients being transferred into the children’s hospital, but even so this stands out…keep an eye on it 👀
*Updated list for tomorrow (1/12)*
Eastern Washington
Colorado
Collin County (north of Dallas), TX
Dallas-Fort Worth, TX
Orange County, CA
Inglewood, CA
😷 Oh boy, let’s add Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the list of places to watch.
Footage of the crowd outside by @sandibachom (follow her):
2:30 — Man with megaphone *during* the attack: [D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser] called the National Guard in here to clear us out. The Defense Department told her, ‘No, thank you.’ [crowd cheers]
Footage from inside the building as terrorists break in. There’s a person with a megaphone describing the floor plan and instructing them where to go.
2:30 — Man with megaphone *during* the attack: [D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser] called the National Guard in here to clear us out. The Defense Department told her, ‘No, thank you.’ [crowd cheers]
As you’ll recall, the DoD issued a statement on Jan 7 that, in light of this footage, appears to corroborate the claims made by the terrorists. As well as assertions from Maryland Gov. Hogan.
Since DoD’s original statement, we’ve learned that it took 3 calls from DC Mayor and a FULL HOUR before Sec Army met to discuss the requests, and 1.5 hrs before *verbal approval* for the DC NG was mobilized. DoD omits Maryland’s request.
I’ll kick things off w/ some hold-overs from yesterday:
Eastern Washington
Colorado
Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin County
3/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Eastern Washington (1/x)
🔸 Bad news: case rates are still very high
🔸 Good news: case rates are improved compared to 4 weeks ago
💩 Nope. I will NOT retweet celebrity journalists with huge platforms that link to scoops and breaking news without giving credit to the journalists that actually did the work.
Also, I have no interest in their quote tweets with derivative “analysis”
It’s shameful how these celebrity journalists w/ hundreds of thousands of followers (or more) go out of their way to:
🔸 follow the link to the story
🔸 copy + paste the URL into a new tweet
🔸 string a few words together and post
Why not just R/T? Why not @ those on the byline?
1/ To be clear: I’m not asking anyone to avoid, or to cancel the folks involved. There’s really just a few of them, and they know who they are…and so do their professional peers and colleagues (some of whom follow me)
