DOJ & FBI on nationwide manhunt with 150+ subjects so far

📌Analysts are scouring intelligence to ID any role domestic terrorist orgs or foreign adversaries may have played in radicalizing Americans who were among the rioters

Initial reports Wed afternoon about pipe bombs planted at the nearby DNC/RNC HQ drew some law enforcement attention away from the breach that was unfolding at the Capitol, Rep. Ryan said, suggesting a “level of coordination.”
FBI & support staff have established a NATIONWIDE DRAGNET to ID members of the mob in the sprawling DOJ criminal inquiry run out of the FBI’s Washington field office — the country’s second largest, with about 1,600 employees.
The FBI has received more than 70,000 photographic and video tips after asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects.

📍Agents were also scrubbing airline passenger manifests and video of air travelers to and from Washington to find potential suspects.
The DOJ manhunt is highly unusual and complex. Like the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, the FBI is relying heavily on video from cellphones and security cameras to identify the perpetrators. Image
🤨Despite the high-profile nature of the attack & complexity of the investigation, no top federal law enforcement or DHS official has gone in front of television cameras or answered questions

A top DC prosecutor last week tamped down the prospect that DOJ would investigate Trump
❓Acting informed federal prosecutors around the nation that all investigations should be run out of the DC USAO & main Justice Department, which would take the lead on all prosecutions.

❓Charging suspects in home states needed to be run by officials in DC first for approval. Image
⚠️The directive has confounded prosecutors nationwide, according to four who spoke on the condition of anonymity

While assailants broke the law in DC, some of them might have organized in their home states & traveled to take part in the attack.
The siege last week took place in DC, giving the USAO there jurisdiction, but prosecutors elsewhere said they believed they could help more speedily bring assailants to justice.

⚠️Prosecutors had also been given no clear reason for the restrained response from DOJ, they said.
FBI leaders have taken a more aggressive internal posture, issuing 3 memos Saturday to agents in the field about FBI’s efforts to find & prosecute all of the people involved in the attack on the Capitol.
One memo reminded agents of 3 federal statutes that they can apply in filing criminal complaints:
one against seditious conspiracy that is rarely used and more commonly invoked violations of laws against federal rioting and civil disorder.
Another FBI email intended to ensure that all agents approached the investigation in a uniform manner included two attachments:
1. list of questions to ask all potential suspects
2. boilerplate language that could be used to establish probable cause in their court documents.
Law enforcement and military personnel role in aiding rioters:

Capt. Emily Rainey, an Army officer who told AP that she had transported more than 100 people to DC for the Trump rally, is being investigated by the Army for any connection to the riots
Multiple law enforcement officers in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington state have been suspended or referred for internal review for attending the rally.

“You had your gawkers..tourists...instigators, your preachers. ..you had your guys in military fatigues who ...came with a plan. They were organized & they were looking to get their chance at infamy.

Those are the kinds that I think about between now and Jan. 20.”
“It’s a rallying cry.

I’m not worried about the people that were caught up in these arrests.

I’m not worried about the people that were at the protest.

I’m worried about the Timothy McVeighs who are out there now realizing that their time has come.”
