In the summer of 2020 I was physically covering Seattle’s protests. Yes there was destruction of property, but what I never saw was an attempt to over throw the government or attack our democracy.
I’ll never forget this exchange when activists stopped a man from trying to break into the abandoned east precinct. Listen to what is being said.
Night at the Chop/Chaz was basically a big block party. For sure there was confrontation with police, but generally the crowds were like this.
Here’s the full clip. The man with the black jacket seemed puzzled at first that he wasn’t supposed to attack the precinct. Ron (man speaking) explained that they weren’t there for that, and then peacefully escorted him out.

As we learn that a capital police officer has died, a law enforcement official told @newsweek that police may have down played the threat posed by groups that stormed the Capitol because they were viewed as “pro-police.”…
We’ve watched groups such as the proud boys dressed in a hodge podge of military and tactical gear, carrying “thin blue line” flags and patches, swear their support for law enforcement - a line repeatedly said by Trump.
The official I spoke to told me they were generally compliant with police commands. “They go where we tell them”, plus in a culture where police are viewed poorly pro-police groups draw sympathy from law enforcement.

People are sharing this: police were overwhelmed and unprepared. I don’t fault them for retreating and removing the barriers so people don’t get trampled. I want to know why they were so understaffed. That’s the question.
There was nothing the police could do here. They tried to quietly retreat. I don’t fault these officers.
As I have said WHY were they so unprepared? Whoever failed to adequately assign manpower here put these officers lives at risk.

#Breaking: speaking to guard member deployed to DC. Tells me chaotic scene. They are unarmed and without body armor and deployed to metro stations.
Tells me they are primarily “walking around” and that they’ve been kept in “safe areas.”
They have no specific orders rather it’s just “ensuring security.” Adds that protestors have been nice to them and even thanking them for their service. “I think the presence is more of a deterrence - but we obviously can’t do anything and like I said have no armor.”

#BreakingNews ahead of protests in DC, intelligence and law enforcement are investigating a radio transmission heard by a JetBlue plane threatening a 9/11 style attack in the nations capital on Weds.…
The transmission said "We are going to fly a plane into the capital on Wednesday to avenge Soleimani's death," but intelligence, law enforcement, and military pilots I said the transmission is likely to not be Iranian, and instead investigators should focus on domestic targets.
Intelligence experts familiar with Iranian intel and its proxies tell me they do not believe Iran would broadcast an attack like this. Instead they believe this more likely an individual focused on the pro-Trump protests tomorrow.

Can’t make this up. A local yoga studio by me has declared itself a church to avoid COVID closures and is now holding in person classes.
Apparently this is a thing amongst Yoga studios.…
I emailed @KingCountyWA and @WAStateGov to ask. Apparently they’re holding 1:30 classes today. Will go and see if I can confirm in person classes. Btw under @GovInslee yoga studios are closed.

How am I spending 2020? Burgers and dogs and cake pops. With my kids and our quarantine neighbors. You know what? As shitty as this year is, I’m glad to still be here and I appreciate all of you, even Louise Mensch and Claude Taylor.
Surviving a global pandemic should make us all want to be a little better and a little more grateful for what we do have. I’m going to start by appreciating @travisakers humor, he tries afterall.
Also grateful for @AndyRichter mentioning I’m the inspiration of his forthcoming book, “words for people.”
