Here's a livestream of the joint FBI/DOJ briefing about last Wednesday's riot at the Capitol. Thread with additional information will be posted below this.

The FBI has "opened more than 160 case files" related to last week's riot, "and that is just the tip of the iceberg," according to Steven D'Antuono, Acting Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI's Washington Field Office.
Acting Attorney General Michael Sherwin says they’ve already opened 170+ cases for investigation and filed charges in 70 of them. Charges range from property destruction and trespassing to assault, theft of national security info, and murder.
Acting AG Michael Sherwin says “some of the rioters specifically targeted members of the media and assaulted them.” The DOJ has assigned a special task force to investigate that.
Acting AG Michael Sherwin says the DOJ is “looking at serious felony cases tied to sedition and conspiracy.”
Acting AG Sherwin says the public “will be shocked” by some of the not-yet-public details of what happened at the Capitol last week.
Acting AG Sherwin says the pipe bombs found around the Capitol were “real devices” with “explosive igniters”. He doesn’t know why the bombs were never detonated.
Acting AG Sherwin says prosecutors are treating this as a "significant counterterrorism or counterintelligence investigation."

As part of the probe, they're looking at "money, travel records, disposition, movement, communication records..."

The DOJ said Tuesday that prosecutors are pursuing charges of sedition against the Trump supporters involved in the deadly attack on the Capitol. If found guilty, they’d be the 1st people convicted of sedition in more than *25 years*.

I wrote about that:
bylinetimes.com/2021/01/13/tip…
The last time the DOJ convicted someone on charges of sedition was in the aftermath of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, when 10 people were found guilty of seditious conspiracy.
In addition to the investigation of the riot, two of Trump’s top allies – along with his son Don Jr. – are reportedly under investigation by the DC Attorney General, who is considering charging them w/ riot incitement for their incendiary remarks at a rally just before the riot. Image

Wow. The army is investigating a psychological operations officer who led a group of people from North Carolina to the rally in DC that led up to the deadly pro-Trump riot in the US Capitol.
theguardian.com/us-news/2021/j…
The group she’s assigned to “uses information and misinformation to shape the emotions, decision-making and actions of American adversaries.”
The same officer made headlines in May “after she posted a video online of her pulling down caution tape at a playground that was closed under North Carolina’s Covid-19 restrictions.”

JFC: “They moved ahead with executions in the middle of the night... They executed a prisoner while an appeal was still pending... They bought drugs from a secret pharmacy that failed a quality test... They hired private executioners & paid them in cash.”
propublica.org/article/inside…
“They left one prisoner strapped to the gurney while lawyers worked to remove a court order.”
So as Trump and his DOJ were pardoning a bunch of crooked insiders who admitted their own guilt, the same administration was (and still is) working behind the scenes to execute the most federal prisoners since World War II. That’s how they’re spending their final days in office.

This is a very vague & lofty goal, but it’s good to hear that he’s prioritizing it. However, it’d be wise to start thinking about how much (more) control you really want the government to have over internet/social media content.
When you consider giving the government more control of online content, imagine what a future authoritarian leader could do with it, not just what may be done with it in the next 4 years.
Having said that... hi @JoeBiden! If you want to start a new program to fund grants for behavioral scientists and psychologists to study online misinformation, I would fully support that proposal. Just putting that out there...

As we come together for our weekly “WTF RUDY GIULIANI” moment, I think it’s worth remembering that even his rambling, incoherent Fox News segments play into a broader “strategy” meant to induce cognitive overload by flooding the zone with disinformation and nonstop chaos.
It doesn’t matter that Trump, Giuliani, etc, aren’t proving their case. They don’t have to. All they have to do is raise doubts about the election outcome, then inject enough disinformation and division to make people stop believing that one shared truth or reality even exists.
We all know Trump, Giuliani, etc, are corrupt and dishonest. But they don’t need to and aren’t trying to change our minds about them. Rather, they want to convince us that everyone else — politicians, poll workers, scientists, journalists — is just as or more corrupt as they are.
