If progressives in the House don't use the platform this process will give them to make a larger case to the public against the GOP, this whole thing is going to be a waste of everyone's time. Sorry!
None of the reforms and none of the legislation people have been talking about will be possible as long as most of the public continues to believe in the bipartisan model of governance. This is an opportunity to challenge it. Elected progressives should if leadership will not.
Trump is done. Frankly, the 2024 question seems like it's already being settled by capital and GOP leadership who've decided, correctly, that he's now expendable. The most important question facing us now is whether we're going to be able to pass legislation in a matter of days.
We had all the time in the world to do an impeachment like this. People were killed in Pittsburgh & El Paso. The idea was dismissed. Now it's happening at a moment when GOP leaders are happy to see it. Sorry, no. It has to be something different and it has to be made worthwhile.
The GOP has been split since 2008. The internal discontent under Obama was palpable; the Tea Party ran a lot of crazy people against a lot of candidates and some of them won. Did it hurt the party overall? No. Did it change anything structurally? No.
Maybe! To be clear, I'm not saying they shouldn't try it. I'm saying that if it's just about Trump, it'll be a massive wasted opportunity and that progressives in the House have a responsibility to broaden the narrative as much as they can.
In brief: The Republican State Leadership Committee is a 527 group aimed at helping Republicans take state legislatures. In 2010, they launched REDMAP, a campaign to take over legislatures in a number of states in time to control the redistricting process after the census.
Since then, as we all know, Republican legislatures have pushed not only racial gerrymandering, but voter ID laws and other forms of voter suppression. Last year, the RSLC raised funds, again, by pitching donors on taking control of redistricting. theguardian.com/us-news/2020/j…
