Sorry, but the only reason that clause in the 14th amendment seems "obscure" is because American schoolchildren have been prevented from learning anything meaningful about the Civil War. @maddow
And because many American adults *refuse* to learn this meaningful fact about the Civil War: the Confederacy and its soldiers committed treason. @maddow
You can tell this "obscurity" comes from active suppression of Civil War history because EVERYONE knows they have 1st Amendment rights or 2nd Amendment rights, but very few people know that the 14th Amendment extends those rights to the state and local level.
"equal protection under law"
"due process"
"natural born citizenship"
everybody knows these phrases from the 14th amendment. the reason they don't know clause 3 is because it memorializes the historic fact that the US had to protect itself from seditious ex-traitors taking over.

.@BritHume was trending on Twitter because the far-right fringe is attacking him for simply acknowledging that Trump's presidency is ending.
Brit Hume traded in his journalistic career to become a propagandist for Fox News, and the monster he helped create is devouring him.
We are going to be seeing a lot more of this in the days and weeks to come. To go all-in for Trump is to commit to a lifelong public espousal of "alternate facts" and absolutely crazed conspiracy theories, including the self-aggrandizing delusions of white supremacists.
Conservatives who oppose Trumpism—authoritarianism, cult-like worship, denial of facticity and reality, white supremacist nationalism—will be regarded as traitors to "the truth" by Trump's rabid cultists. So get out while you can, and shake the dust from your feet.
some thank you's:
-to @Ben_Alpers, who spoke to the graduate student conference at UT Dallas in 2012 and urged us all to join @AAUP. I did before I was out of grad school
-to @susandamussen who mentioned over cocktails at @AHAhistorians something called "professional insurance"
(Will write more about this later. tl;dr check the member benefits page of any academic org to which you belong and see if they offer a group policy for professional liability insurance which also provides legal representation if/when your employer seeks to fire you. Worth it!)
-to @TenuredRadical, who put me in touch with some legal / advocacy contacts who are providing assistance
-to @TheNeuroTimes, who provided invaluable advice and contacts w/ specialists in higher ed law
-to @HankReichman of @AAUP for speaking up for professors' rights as citizens
LOL. @collincollege is publicly throwing me under the bus, while the college president sends out an email saying that personnel decisions will not be played out in public.
Here's how I "indoctrinate" my students: I help them make better arguments to express their own insights/views. The (conservative) student in question got an A, because I grade on demonstration of knowledge/skill, not on political views.
chill out, bros! savedbyhistory.blogspot.com/2018/12/to-bec…
Okay, this is fascinating to me. The first tweet in this thread was QTing "Law Enforcement Today's" tweet publicizing their blog post on me and Sami Schalk writing mean tweets about Pence. Their tweet said, "these are the people indoctrinating your children." This was my reply.
mini-thread: If anyone is curious about the actual aims of @campusreform, @FoxNews, and other right-wing outrage outlets that gin up stories about "radical professors" (as if nobody else on Twitter noticed Pence's bleeding demon eyes), here is their goal in a nutshell 1/
As I mentioned in my thread schooling the "journalists" who are the willing tools of this propaganda machine, there has been a concerted and well-funded effort on the far right to delegitimize and defund higher education. All of us who study higher ed know this. But why?
Well, for precisely this: to convince the 70+/- % of Americans over 25 who do not themselves have a college education that a college education is worthless. This accomplishes a few things. 1) It assures that the majority of the electorate will not take classes that teach them...
