Hey, everyone. Today is the debate and vote on the second impeachment of Donald Jᵉˢᵘˢ ᶜʰʳⁱˢᵗ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᵃ ᶠᵘᶜᵏ ᵘᵖ Trump
OK, they're starting impeachment. 2 hours of debate today, es todo. Then a vote.
Rep McGovern speaking about the events of the 6th. "This was not a protest; this was an insurrection. This was a well-organised attack on our country that was incited by Donald Trump. I will never, ever forget what I saw when I looked into the eyes of the attackers. I saw evil."
Rep McGovern: "Every moment that Donald Trump is in the White House, he is a danger to this country."
Rep Tom Cole is up. He has 30 minutes. I long for death.
Tom Cole is basically like, "yeah six people DIED, but he only has a week left 🥺"
I would just like to take this moment to thank Moon Dog Brewery, whose beer i am enjoying during the second impeachment of Donald Jʲᵘˢᵗ ᵍᵉᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ᶠᵘᶜᵏ ᵒᵘᵗ ᵒᶠ ᵒᶠᶠⁱᶜᵉ Trump in 13 months.
Rep Tom Cole is basically like, "but what about unity????????"

You know, having NOT been living under a fucking rock for the last two months, I can't help but notice they didn't seem concerned with unity when they refused to recognize the democratically elected president-elect.
Rep Judy Chu saying, "These people were radicalized, and they were radicalized by the president of the united states... He must be held accountable. He must be impeached."
Rep Rodney Davis is saying he wants to create a commission that would be tasked with investigating the attack that would consist of 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats to prevent this from happening again.
Rep Steny Hoyer is saying that what happened last week "requires urgent action, and it requires urgent action against the President of the United States."
Rep Hoyer asks, "If these actions are not worthy of impeachment, then WHAT IS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE?"
Rep Hoyer is arguing against the Republican defense that this is a "rush to judgment". He is reading Rep Al Green's resolution, which says that Trump has violated his oath to the United States, sowed discord, and weaponized hate for political gain.
Rep Hoyer is quoting Trump, who said at the rally, "We will never give up, we will never concede. You don't concede when there's theft involved."

And that people acted on those words.
Rep Hoyer says, "to prevent national harm to our society, Donald Trump's conduct warrants immediate impeachment trial, removal, and should not enjoy any future office"
Rep Hoyer says, "Is there little time left [in Trump's presidency]? Yes. But it's never too late to do the right thing."
Rep Jason Smith literally just described Babbitt's death and then yells at the Democrats, "Can the Democrats and the speaker PUT THE PEOPLE FIRST? This is a reckless impeachment!"

Thank you, sir, those were certainly a lot of stupid words you just cobbled together please sit.
Rep Nancy Mace has been recognized. She just quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in her appeal not to "rush" the impeachment, in case you're wondering how this is going.
Ah, fuck Jim Jordan is up
Just as another reminder.
Jim Jordan was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom literally two days ago, so my Jim Jordan Bullshit Threshold is buried six feet below the floor.
Jim Jordan's time expired and i said out loud, "THANK CHRIST."
Rep McGovern responds to Jim Jordan, "The Capital was stormed and people died because of this lie. Trying to make these false equivalencies? GIVE ME A BREAK. The President attempted a coup! People died! This president is not fit to remain in office."
Rep Reschenthaler is up, and is insisting "Trump is committed to a peaceful transfer of power."

You know, if I were a congresswoman, I would be more than a little uncomfortable if my colleagues defended someone who tried to murder me. Just putting that out there!
Oh, I'm hearing the networks switched away during Jim Jordan's time? Lol. You're all very lucky you did not hear that incoherent nonsense.
Rep Lloyd Dogget says, "Trump tried to violently overthrow the government. America, we did stop the steal. We stopped Donald Trump from stealing democracy and installing himself as a tyrant."
Rep Rosa DeLauro has AMAZING purple hair streaks! (yes, let me have this moment. I said, "PRETTY!!!!!!")
Apparently, the Republicans are having some issues with their speakers being delayed, so I don't know what that's about.
Here's Rep DeLauro's streaks! Lovely.
Rep. Dan Bishop is literally saying that Trump didn't "incite an insurrection" he just gave "incitement speech", I SHIT YOU NOT. My mind actually broke listening to that. I am out of beer, please help.
Rep Ilhan Omar says, "We must impeach and remove this president from the office immediately, so he cannot be a threat to this democracy."
The Republicans are reserving their time, so I am just waiting for the eventual deluge of "YES, PEOPLE DIED, BUT CAN WE NOT SIMPLY HEAL? 😭😭"
Oh, wait. Republicans saying, "Our speakers are having a hard time getting here."

Does anyone know what's happening? Are they held up, or refusing to speak?
So Rep Tom Cole is just speechifying. It's very rote, all the same talking points about "not rushing to judgment" and "healing" and "unity" and blahblah bloopty bumblefuck
If you do decide to go back and watch this, do not make it into a drinking game where you drink whenever Republicans say the words "healing" or "unity", you will not make it.
McGovern is pointing out that his colleagues gave oxygen to Trump's lies, and turned the other way at his racism and bigotry. "We will never have unity without truth, and without accountability."
They're now holding a procedural vote to begin debate on the impeachment. They'll then vote on the rules. CSPAN is saying that they're expecting a final impeachment vote around 3PM eastern.
(I just want to add that if I DO get something wrong today, feel free to correct me. Listening while typing is difficult.)
Oh, and if you do enjoy my livetweeting today, I will leave this here (no pressure): paypal.com/paypalme/eliza…
CSPAN is noting that the delay on this vote is due to the proxy voting. There are some members of congress who are quarantining, etc.
6 Republican members refused to vote just now.
Maybe I shouldn't use the word "refuse". Is that too strong? Six Republicans sat out the vote, as did 1 Dem. They neither voted "present", yea, nay, or by proxy. They simply did not vote, which is their right.

Sorry I didn't get to hear the time Dems/Reps had just now because MY HUSBAND was very loudly saying that if Jim Jordan was assigned to the Republican side, he simply could not watch this. Honestly, who can blame him?

How is it possible that I turned on the House debate JUST as Jim Jordan started speaking? Why have the gods cursed me so?
On the PLUS side (there is a plus side), since Jim Jordan is in his own house (this is a remote debate), he is not YELLING. He still sounds like an asshole, but at least my hearing will not suffer.
Sorry, I forgot to be clear, they are currently debating the 25th amendment. The article of impeachment will be considered later in the day, possibly at bedtime for me.

Pro Forma session is about to begin. CSPAN link below. The House will be introducing a number of resolutions pertaining to the insurrection today.
The Sergeant of Arms of the House of Representatives has just submitted his resignation.
House resolution to execute 25th amendment. Immediate objection. So it failed.

And the House is now adjourned.

I see a lot of people saying "now is the time to extend an olive branch to Trump supporters", and I'll illustrate why that makes me angry with yet another NYTimes article following a Trump voter that you should absolutely not click on and give more views.
The cruelty is the point.
The cruelty is all they have.
