🎉🎉🎉*Celebratory thread*🎉🎉🎉

Super excited to share news that my wonderful teacher Dr Akram Nadwi's long-awaited 43-volume biographical collection on over 10,000 #Muslim female scholars & transmitters of #Hadith has been published in Arabic today!#Muhaddithat #women #history
Based on decades of research carried out by Shaykh Akram Nadwi in #Oxford & in archives across the world, #Muhaddithat shines a light on over 1000 years of #Muslim women's scholarly histories, their teaching journeys across sea and desert & contribution to the Islamic tradition..
Those following the development of this fascinating work will know that the introductory volume to the encyclopeadia was first published in English in 2007 (revised second edition in 2013) - with translations in #Turkish, #Urdu, #Bosniak and one in #French soon to be published...
The cover shows a map illustrating the study journeys of Fatimah bint Sa`d al-Khayr & a few of her principal teachers & students. Her family moved from Valencia to the western edge of #China in the 12th Century. She traversed a distance of over 3000 miles on her scholarly journey
Another 12th Century scholar, Zaynab bint al-Kamal taught more than 400 books of Hadith – her camel loads of texts attracted camel loads of students. As a natural teacher with a towering intellectual reputation, she taught in the most prestigious academic institutions in Damascus
The collection is filled with stories of Muslim women, young & old, across continents & through the ages, who travelled intensively for religious knowledge & routinely attended & taught in major mosques & madrasas, critiqued hadith & issued fatwas, with public standing& authority

It has been a privilege to witness the making of this historic contribution. Cherished memories, since 2005 spanning over a decade with @MehrunishaS, of Sh Akram sharing his research in classes, phone calls & on our travels...challenging what we thought we knew & inspiring us :)
Women aren't just making history, they made #history. This collection brings that history to us. It carries the power to shape the present & future for all those women who are excluded from spaces of #education, #worship & #public life across the globe. #muhaddithat #Muslimwomen
P.s. Copies arriving in the UK within the next few weeks - make some spaces on your shelves!

Launch event coming soon - watch this space....

English translation, digitisation - yes, it's all on the cards :)
