My answer is summarised with two hadiths, which are posted in the following tweets below.
“Marriage is slavery, so look to who you give your daughters to in slavery” - Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab, Asma’ b. Abu Bakr and A’isha b. Abu Bakr (Mawquf, Sahih by al-Bayhaqi)
At the end, the narrator adds, which is left untranslated in the english, but seen in the original arabic:
ومعنى قوله "عوان عندكم" يعني أسرى في أيديكم
"and the meaning of the phrase عوان عندكم means that they are prisoners between your hands”
Allah, in his divine wisdom, has revealed the shari’i framework for marriage to be patriarchal in nature. There are checks and balances, by way of rights and rules placed upon the spouses, and qudaat (judges) who can call a spouse to task over them.
The default form of Islamic marriage is indeed similar compared to slavery and captivity due to the level of authority possessed by the husband, as you can see in the authentic words of the Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم and the sahabah who described it as such.
So for a muslim or muslimah to turn around and have a problem with the *default* form of Islamic marriage, indicates that they are indeed displeased with the shari’ah.
There is a reason we say:
رضيت بالله ربًا وبالإسلام دينًا وبمحمد صلى الله عليه وسلم نبيًا
