THREAD I've spent a couple of hours trawling Twitter to investigate the practice by (overwhelmingly) Tory MPs who block their constituents on social media. In the past MONTH the following MPs have blocked people who apparently have only asked them difficult questions:
My MP Robbie Moore asserts that he tweets in a purely personal capacity - despite calling himself an MP on his Twitter a/c. The Speaker's Digital Democracy Commission's recommended guidance for the use of Twitter by MPs advises that "The fact that you hold public office means
that your views will be interpreted by people as representing the views of your position and party. Using the disclaimer (that all views are personal etc) doesn't protect you or make people less likely to think this." The Parliamentary Code of Conduct for MPs
applies to ALL aspects of MP's public life. I think it's fair to say that MPs tweet in the capacity of a public figure. The PCC says "Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny
is appropriate to their office." MPs who block constituents on social media because they ask difficult questions are avoiding submitting themselves to scrutiny.
This list of MPs is only the tip of the iceberg. Questions need to be asked of @HouseofCommons@Conservatives
@mrjamesob Would love you to address this undemocratic practice of many, many MPs (mainly Tory) in blocking constituents who ask them difficult questions on social media. I think they’re breaking the Parliamentary Code of Conduct. Please could you RT my thread? THANKS 🙏
*more additions* from across the political spectrum. The blocking-MPs sent to me seem to be mainly Tory, so I have only included party if they are not:
Imran Ahmad Khan @imranahmadkhan
Stuart Anderson @Stuart4WolvesSW
Sarah Atherton @AthertonNWales
Duncan Baker @duncancbaker
More names. All Tory unless stated. I'm extending the list to include MPs who block on other social media, plus those who mute or do not permit replies.
