A few people have asked about my trash drafting process, so I figured I'd explain how I write a book. The alternate title of this thread is: Why I Will Probably Never Sell a (non-sequel) Book On Proposal.

As a reader, I love series. I love being able to immerse myself in multiple books! But as a writer, it's very hard outside of self-publishing to do fantasy series unless the author is a bestseller and book 1 is a success. Publisher support dwindles or disappears entirely.
The thing is, we know based on a lot of very good data that most series start really picking up audience steam around books 3 or 4. It brings a lot of readers to book 1. But the current trad publishing model values an instant success over series longevity.
And basically, once an author loses publisher support on a series, that's it. The series is basically toast. Trad authors can't do things like a series loss leader to bring in a bigger audience. We can't do our own bookbub. We don't have access to instant sales data.
