President @vonderleyen on Europe's slow rollout of the vaccination plan: "We were too late to authorise; we were too optimistic when it came to massive vaccination, and perhaps were too confident that what we ordered would be delivered on time."
However, von der Leyen adds, "I cannot imagine what would have happened if just a handful of big players, big member states (🇫🇷🇩🇪👀) had rushed to it," leaving the rest empty handed.
President Von der Leyen defends the EU's decision to go the long way in the process to approve the vaccines to ensure security and "establish confidence."
"Science has outstripped to industry," says von der Leyen on the issues companies are facing to produce the vaccines leading to delays in deliveries, "industry must adapt to the pace of science."
"We now need predictability and this is why we introduced the export transparency and authorisation mechanism," says von der Leyen, "Europe is ready to help but we insist on our fair share."
President @vonderleyen admits "mistakes were made" in the process of setting up the mechanism when it comes to the #Irishborder and she "deeply regret it," yet she adds "the bottom line is that in the end, we got it right."
Von der Leyen commits to doing her utmost to share all contracts signed with the pharmaceutical companies with the European Parliament, one of the main critics from EU lawmakers.
MEPs in main groups way less fierce with von der Leyen than it would have been expected last week. "Mistakes were made but key decisions were right," said EPP chair @ManfredWeber. But there are exceptions.
Leftist @ManonAubryFr asked for a formal investigation to ensure accountability within the Commission for the vaccines fiasco: "We have the right to know after all these vaccines were paid with our money.
Former Polish PM @BeataSzydlo said von der Leyen "took that prerogative from the member states and must fulfill her promises."
Also: most EU lawmakers agree with von der Leyen that it was right to go for the longer authorisation process to ensure safety and citizens' confidence over quick delivery of the vaccines.
