Some 1300 years ago in Karnataka there lived a genius who wrote "Gaṇitasārasan̄graha" (which is earliest text devoted entirely to mathematics)

The man who's work later borrowed by Arabs & Europeans

Thread on "Mahāvīracharya" astounding but forgotten legacy Image
Mahāvirachārya was patronised by rashtrakuta king amoghavarasha

His book"Gaṇita-sāra-saṅgraha"is earliest text devoted entirely to Mathematics

He has described the currently used method of calculating(LCM)of given numbers. The same method was used in Europe later in1500CE
Mahavira wrote "Gaṇita-sāra-saṅgraha" (GSS) in 8th century CE which contains some 1100 slokās & contains elementary topics in arithmetic , algebra , geometry , measurements , logic , number theory , dynamical systems etc

A sheer mathematical genius Image
He was devout jain
His magnum opus "Ganit sara sangraha " start with a sloka bowing to the glory of the jinas

"संख्याज्ञानप्रदिपेन जैनेंद्रन महत्वेशा,
प्रकाशितम जगतसर्व येन तम प्रणमाम्यहम"

He also praised his predecessor aryabhata , brahmagupta & other greats in his works Image
The importance & popularity of "Gaṇita-sāra-saṅgraha"was so huge that it enjoyed statues of most important textbook of mathematics in South Indian for over 3 centuries

A large no of manuscript copies of
"Gaṇita-sāra-saṅgraha"whr discovered in Kerala shows it's popularity Image
Mahāvira was the world's first mathematician to give the general formula for n C r in combinations .

Further he was one of the first mathematician to have given an approximate expression for the circumference of an ellipse(aayata vritta) Image
Mahāvira also made an important remark in connection with "root of negative number" .

He clearly mentioned in his work that a "negative number cannot have a square root" . This is the first remark on clear recognition of the imaginary quantities in mathematics .
He was the first one to write arithmetic in present day form , he described in details the current method of finding lowest common multiple. therefore, it was an invention not by John napier but by our very own scholar mahaviracharya in its actual form.
Mahaviracharya work was an important link in the continuous chain of Indian mathematics ,it acquired pride place particularly in South India

His work was recognised by great chalukyan ruler Raja Raja narendra who got it translated in telugu by mathematician pavuluri mallana Image
The credit tht Mahavira rightly deserves for discovery of various methods in the field of mathematics hs gone almost unnoticed by historians

Mahavira by his sheer achievements in several branches of mathematics has a distinct position in the history of indian & world mathematics

In 1891,one British officer set up a factory for removing the skins of pigs at Sammed Shikharji.

Virchand Gandhi went all the way to kolkata. He spent six months preparing & fighting the case against the factory, and was eventually successful in getting the factory closed.
At the age 21,as the secretary of "Jain Association of India",he worked for the abolition of poll tax levied on pilgrims to Palitana.

In those days to protest against the dictates of the ruler was to invite severe punishment & even death, but that doesn't stop Virchand gandhi.
He often went up form Mahuva to Palitana and prepared the ground for the case.

He met Lord Ray, the governor of Bombay, and Colonel Watson, the Political Agent and made a strong representation and eventually forced the abolition of the poll-tax.

Devi Ambika holds great importance in jainism

She is a Jain Yakshi that is a dedicated attendant of the 22nd Jina Neminatha

She is also known as "Sasana Devi", the 'protector goddess'

There are several literary references as well as ancient images & Temples of Ambika.

Thread.
Devi Ambika often shown riding a lion & accompanied by her son, holding a bunch of mangoes in her hand & jina Neminatha sitting on top.

The earliest reference to the iconographic form of Ambika is found in the Chaturvimśatikā of Acharya Bappabhațti suri.
One of the earliest reference of Ambika is obtained in the unfinished Sanskrit commentary of Acharya Jinabhadra-ganin Ksamā-srāmana on the "Viśesāvaśhyaka-bhāśya"(5th century CE).

The work however, refers to her as "Ambā-kuśhmānda vidyā" and not as the yakshi

Āchārya Akalanka Deva who used his power of logic to win over his opponents in Debates.

Perhaps he was one of the greatest minds Jainism has ever produced.

He lived in 7th- 8th century & was one of the greatest logician & Debater

Thread
Akalanka Deva occupies a unique place in the development of Indian logic.Akalanka deva cemented the foundations of jaina logic.

Akalnaka himself thought that his philosophy would not be understood by his contemporaries because of their small-minded vanity.
He was wrong about that, fortunately for us. His philosophy certainly did find recognition & inspired many after him.

Acharya Akalanka greatly contributed to the development of the philosophy of the Syādvāda & is therefore called the “Master of Jain logic” – Syādvāda Vidyāpati.

Thread on Dilwara Jain Temples.

It's not a Temple,it's a living example of science of stone carving ,a magic weaved into stone.

Unfortunately, these incredible works of art have not been publicized much and remain relatively unknown even to most Indians. ImageImage
Vimal Vasahi Temple - This Temples was built Vimal shah commander-in- chief of Solanki ruler Bhim dev.

It took more than 14 years to build this temple by 1500 artisians & 1200 labours , with cost of whooping 19 crores, yes u heard it right 19 crores that too 1000years ago. Image
While entering the door of Vimal Vasahi we get the glimpse of the grandeur of sculpted marble, exquisite carvings of ceilings ,pillars & arches of the dream like far beyond any one's expectations.

Do spare a thought for architect "kirtidhar" who accomplished this wonder of world. Image
