My husband @svendawhite is White + Muslim. I had a trippy dream yesterday: I was married to Svend, but met up with another Svend who is a different guy but the same? In the dream, I'm contemplating cheating on [Muslim Svend spouse] with [White non-Muslim boring other Svend] ...
(I know it's hard to keep up) in the end I decided [non muslim Svend] wasn't worth the trouble, so I backed away.

Narrated the dream to real-life Svend. "So you were planning on cheating on *me* with *me*? Your cheating dreams are really lacking in imagination, aren't they?"
Pandemic cheating dream? Cheating on spouse with same-but-other spouse, so is pandemic-safe? One might say, you should get out more but I DON'T so.
now I am wondering if I want to interrogate real life Svend about his comment.
Just how much imagination SHOULD one have in one's cheating dreams ... ?
Good Girl who didn't party in her youth at all trying to imagine being Naughty.
One has to ask the fuqaha about the fiqh of cheating with Same But Other Man in dream.

7yrs ago today my then-kindergartener's private school staff summoned me to claim kid had 'oppositional defiant disorder.' I said she has quite the opposite problem, and shut that nonsense down right away.
Today we laugh about it because no kid is further from oppositional than👇 Image
I was a native English speaker, a prof w/ 3 grad degrees, 2 of them in education, and I still had to hack my way thru the system, hopping school to school, for my kid to not be misdiagnosed.

I still feel the pit in my stomach I had at that terrifying meeting.
The special ed specialist (had an MA) worked with juvenile delinquents (I guess if you have a hammer ...) He just threw it out, happily, as if he was solving a puzzle - ODD.

I felt like I was looking at a lifetime of fighting the system.

The US government has quite literally robbed Americans of homes, food, water, and power, using enormous amounts of wealth instead to occupy and plunder brown people far away.

Your wars are killing people in the global South AND Americans.
As Texans fundraise for bottled water and to pay skyrocketing power bills, the US defense budget is $706 billion.

Since the pandemic, Americans have received $1200 each, while the US gave $500 million to Israel in military aid, power dedicated to crushing Palestinians' lives.
Cutting the defense budget isn't just a benevolent and humanitarian project for Afghans and Iraqis.

Poor Americans struggle to pay rent, buy groceries, obtain healthcare, heat their homes, and drink clean water. It is an unconscionable situation.

In 2010 (while teaching AND going through chemo for breast cancer), I got a mediocre student eval score.

(ONE white student in a very small grad class went on a cruise instead of turning in work. She gave me a killer eval for that B).
The rest of my student evals fell within medium-good range, especially for first years on the tt, teaching advanced grad courses.

I had exceptional research, good professional and institutional service, and good teaching measures.
The all-white tenure + promotion committee, some of whom didn't even show up to teach their classes, decided in their wisdom that I would not be reappointed.

No mulligans for me.

@springsteen I'd like to suggest some shots for your next Jeep ad.
This one is in Iowa - the middle of the US. Would it work for your ad? I think it would.
This one would be beautiful too. Since we are coming together.

PS: Who's 'we,' by the way?
This is the Oak Creek Sikh temple. I think it's perfect.

Many of us never speak publicly about what we believe -esp religious views on gender & sexuality. Because of community gossip & judgement that can literally get people kicked out of jobs, orgs, networks.
People learn to self-censor.
For male religious leaders of known harmful behavior, as long as they buy into patriarchy and traditional gender roles, all is forgotten. Women too must buy into patriarchal religion to be acceptable.
I'm mostly not into self-censoring - it's not a big virtue; it's due to my circumstances, where I live, my spouse, the kind of person I am. My solidarity is relatively open.

But I'm aware of possible dangers. When you work within the community, there's always risk.

The single clip from "Cuties" that is being circulated is not representative of the entire movie.
I have watched it. This is a serious, ethnographic film by a Muslim woman on girlhood, cultural tension, race, belonging, sexism, and the widespread sexualization of girls.
Yes, there are some terrible camera angles and images. I would not show it to your young kids. If you are attracted to little girls, you should not watch it.

But sexualized content is widely available and impacts young girls. That's the point. That's the reality of our children.
The two-minute clip is part of a story. It is not the whole story. This girl is torn between cultures, yearning to belong, deploying her body.
The ending is amazing. I can't say more because spoilers. But it's beautiful.
In case you're wondering, I am quite prudish as people go.
