Most climate people I know can tell you about the moment they 'groked' how big and urgent this challenge really is; when you knew it in your bones, not just your brain.
Maybe seeing what's happened in Texas over the last week has been that moment for you.
If so, read on...
First of all, hi. You are not alone. ❤️
This realization can be overwhelming. The problems are so big and so complex. And we have only a few decades to fundamentally reorient how we live in and with the world if we want to avoid unfathomable human suffering.
It might be tempting to slink into despair or nihilism.
Please don't.
The future is not a foregone conclusion.
We shape the future. We write the future.
As Rebecca Solnit wrote, "hope locates itself in the premises that we don't know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act."
What are you willing to protect?
The children in your life? Your community? The dreams of your ancestors? A piece of the natural world that fills you with spiritual solace or wonder?
Find that thing & hold onto it.
Let it move you into action & sustain you in that action.
No matter who you are, you can contribute to solving this crisis, easing the pain it is causing today, or preparing future generations for the world they will inherit.
What do you have that can be used in service of preserving a healthy, livable climate?
We’re a board game family and on snowy days like this weekend, we play a lot of games. So today seems like as good a time as any to talk about some of my favorite board/card games to play with kids. I would also like any recommendations you might have!
First, a kids version of the adult board game nerd classic, Catan Jr. This is just as fun to play as original Catan, but removes some of the more aggressive elements of the original (like stealing when the robber moves), to cut down on hurt feelings and fussing.
Sushi Go is a fun passing card game that moves quickly and is very portable. And the illustrations are cute.
