Aviation experts can correct me if I’m wrong, but the fact that the debris didn’t puncture the fuselage is both a miracle and testament to the robustness of the 777 design.
cc @eriklg. Why didn’t/couldn’t the crew shut down the engine after the uncontained failure?
Crazy, this frame was the *fifth* 772 Boeing manufactured. 26 year old aircraft (the age doesn’t matter much, these things are maintained and refurbed well). I’m sure a lot of focus will be on that PW4000 engine’s maintenance log though.
This is the full UA328-ATC traffic through the incident. The level of professionalism on both ends is astounding. Really phenomenal job to get a 772 heavy with an uncontained engine failure down safely @united and Denver ATC.
All’s well that ends well so one can take some amusement in this slightly understated flight status here in the UA app. Just some minor repairs...
Correction to first tweet. Upon landing it is clear how bad this could have been. The fuselage did indeed sustain a puncture. via @dburbach:
I just noticed one other thing, that I’m sure others have pointed out elsewhere but I missed earlier. That looks like *two* fractured fan blades. One completely, the second one partially. PW4000 engine series worldwide probably rightly getting a hard look.

2/ We are well aware that it is difficult to convince people of this. Many come with strong priors. Opponents of NFU tend to view any Sole Purpose as tantamount to it. And supporters of NFU often want it to be. So it’s hard to convince folks there is daylight. But there is.
From 2020 DoD Chinese Military Power Report: "New developments in 2019 further suggest that China intends to increase the peacetime readiness of its nuclear forces by moving to a launch-on-warning (LOW) posture with an expanded silo-based force." 🤔
