It occurs to me that a minimum wage law wouldn’t be so needed if people weren’t shackled to their jobs for health coverage (if they’re even lucky enough to have decent coverage from their employer). Huh. It’s almost like universal coverage would make the market free FOR ALL!
That is, if losing coverage were no longer a concern, a person could indeed walk off a job to go elsewhere – seek a new career. Underpaying jobs would have to compete (pay more) to get those workers back. Unfulfilling, high-pay jobs would have to make them more rewarding.
If workers could easily move from one job to the next, it would create competition for their labor in the “free” market, rather than easy exploitation and threats of bankruptcy via healthcare costs. Weird! Remember how we almost had a groundswell for Universal Healthcare?
