We should talk about the fact that apologizing is often a people-pleasing anxiety response rather than a response to the genuine belief that you’ve done something wrong and that’s why “there’s nothing to apologize for” isn’t always reassuring.
A better response is tricky. People I’m close with who know I struggle with OCD will generally say “I’m sorry you’re struggling” because they know when Im apologizing excessively it means that I’m having a hard time with my anxiety. But obv it isn’t always appropriate 1/
I think acknowledging the feelings is a good way to go though, in a way that isn’t patronizing. Reassuring the person that they’re not a burden/annoyance etc CAN be a good move but it can be tricky with OCD and other anxiety disorders where reassurance becomes maladaptive

An Instagram account with over a million followers is spreading the misinformation that OCD is caused by metal. I tried to call them out and they immediately blocked me (someone who knows a lot about OCD and actually HAS IT). This is actively harming my community. Image
Retweets welcome
They’re also blocking my other advocate friends

Rejection sensitive dysphoria is physically painful dude it’s so rough
I hate that it has such an impact on me
It all made sense when I figured out I had ADHD and started reflecting on the physical pain of being rejected by people I liked

Realizing that the reason so many people assume all neurodivergent people are poor communicators is that our society measures “good” communicating using ableist metrics like eye contact and body language.
Like I’ve heard so many people say “autistic people aren’t good communicators but they’re good obline” WELL KAREN MAYBE ITS BECAUSE ONLINE YOURE NOT MAKING ABLEIST JUDGEMENTS ABOUT WHAT THEYRE DOING WITH THEIR EYES AND HANDS
Online you can’t tell me I’m talking too loud and looking at the floor

I’ve seen tons of people on here make the very ill-informed claim that certain intrusive thoughts make you dangerous. The thoughts in question are typically those associated with OCD. So here’s a thread about those thoughts, by someone who actually knows about (and has) OCD🧵
People with OCD get ego dystonic intrusive thoughts. Ego dystonic intrusive thoughts are thoughts that don’t align with a persons character, value, or true intentions. In other words, we people with OCD get intrusive worries about doing things we’d never actually do.

For example, someone with harm OCD (a subtype of OCD obsessions) might have intrusive worries about stabbing their loved ones on impulse, and those worries might be accompanied by vivid images of actually stabbing people.
