NYT published a piece on the crisis on women's sexual and reproductive rights in #Venezuela. It sheds light on a critical issue that has received scarce attention from all interested parties.
Here is a little thread 🧵to add context
Women's reproductive health and rights have been in crisis for many years in #Venezuela. Reducing maternal mortality has been a challenge for yrs. Despite some early improvements, the current rate is similar to what we had back in 2003. It jumped up by 65% between 2015-16
Vzla has one of the most backward reproductive rights legislation in S. America. Feminists brought this issue to the table during the constituent process of 99 only to have it diluted by religious groups including Constituent Ma. Isabel Rodríguez, the first lady at the time.
Feminist+LGBTQ rights activists brought up the issue again during the constitutional reform in 2007 (I was there 🙋🏽‍♀️). The right to abortion was dismissed again, now by the Chavista leadership. See this article by Gioconda Espina about this process: biblioteca.clacso.edu.ar/clacso/gt/2014…
Access to proper reproductive health services, especially when giving birth, has been limited and poor. Contraceptives are scarce and impossible to afford. Feminist groups have been denouncing these for years cepaz.org/noticias/mujer…
Venezuela's complex humanitarian crisis is multidimensional and deeply gendered. Inasmuch as it's highly geopolitical, it's a crisis of democracy and the decline of rights of all Venezuelans. This translates into the further deterioration of women's reproductive and sexual rights
The right to safe abortions continues to be out of the government policy agendas, and I am afraid it is also not a priority in much of the opposition. It is urgent that reproductive rights are taken up in any political dialogue and transitional processes
