What risible low-blow point-scoring this is. Let me explain. 1/9
Take a respected organisation I often spar with and have political disagreements with, like @CPRE. If they had a staff member who had made racist remarks, I’d expect and anticipate they would deal with them in exactly the same professional manner as @London_Cycling have done. 2/9
On a side note, also expect colleagues to speak to all types of large and fairly representative organisations in their roles. I also expect them to have political views and therefore be more sympathetic to certain organisations than others. No issues there. 3/9
Now if LCC didn’t suspend Simon Still and conduct a proper investigation, and if Lambeth Cyclists didn’t dissociate themselves from Still following his comments coming to light, then it might raise legitimate concerns about those organisations - i.e is there institutional culture
Within them that means they find his comments acceptable (or they overlook it) or questions on whether they are able to deal with such serious matters like this in a professional matter. 5/9
But I’d like to think that I’d never try and tarnish an organisation that I have political differences with due to the actions of one of their staff members which was correctly and thoroughly dealt with. Neither would I use such a matter for political point-scoring. 6/9
The questions by Cllr Biggs, in particular, number 2, are fair. But the manner in which this has done this (so publicly) smacks of point-scoring. There is nothing to suggest (that I’ve seen) that Councillors or colleagues were aware of Stills comments when working with him. 7/9
This is a transparent attempt to tarnish @London_Cycling and their local affiliate groups due to the actions of one staff member who is being dealt with in the proper manner. It’s a transparent attempt to try and somehow link rival colleagues to Still’s comments. 8/9
If anything I use behaviour like that of Cllr Briggs to remind myself to ‘Be Better’. What can I learn from this? Firstly, I must stop and think before I attack organisations I don’t like politically and question myself, are these specific criticisms legitimate and fair? 9/9
