Everyone’s talking about the powerful visualization here, but also notice the piece on Venezuela ON THE FRONT PAGE. Why is Venezuela showing up so frequently? Who gains from all this attention and negative association with Venezuela?
Why are multiple sources drawing comparisons between empty shelves in Texas and Venezuela?
Venezuela is shorthand for “socialism is bad” and you should expect more focus on it as the failures of American capitalism continue to rise.
Notice the story is about women’s birth control rights in Venezuela. This is anti-socialist propaganda targeting American liberals.
It just doesn’t make sense on the front page of the NYT given everything else that’s going on.

Calculating the pointwise mutual information (PMI) between word occurrence in Wikipedia articles and the gender of person the article is about. Higher PMI values indicate increased expectation of occurring in articles about women.
Zero basically means the rate of occurrence of the word doesn’t change depending on the gender.
Created this using the full dump of Wikipedia plus the gender labels from cs.cmu.edu/~ark/bio/
