Tried to distil my thoughts on the current war between Facebook, the government and media companies. Might make some people mad, but I argue why the media code doesn’t make sense and what we could be doing instead smh.com.au/national/faceb…
One adjacent issue to all this is how the crisis in media has led to journalists aligning with media execs more regularly in recent years. News and Nine certainly aren’t unprofitable companies, so it’s strange to totally buy into their corporate strategy and ignore alternatives.
You wouldn't know it if you only followed the Aus debate, but France's response to the monopoly power of Facebook etc was to implement a 3% tax on revenue, to bypass corporate offshoring of profits. Easy to guess by News/Nine don't want to argue for more taxes, but everyone else?
Not only is this far more straightforward than the code, it means there can be some democratic mechanism to shift $$$ from big tech to local media, ideally prioritising public broadcasting, smaller regional outlets etc. As it stands the opposite will likely occur.

This is objectively worse than Bannon. There’s no “he advised the President” defence, they are a straight up fascist organisation, they participated in a violent attempted insurrection, even Twitter has banned their leader. But it’s good enough for the ABC?
Driven ultimately by the worst trait in journalism — ego. Where a particular kind of reporter thinks their camera, intense glare and perceptive questioning can “catch out” a wrongdoer. Coupled with a total failure to understand they’re being played.
Anyway, nothing will change, they’ll win Walkleys, everyone at the ABC will shut up because the people who back this stuff are too powerful, everyone who critiques it will written off as hyperwoke or bitter.
