I’m having my cybersecurity students read the @FTC action against BLU Products from 2018. In reading it again for this upcoming class, I’m wondering if this would have gotten a different kind of attention if it happened recently. For those that are not aware…
BLU Products sold “branded” mobile phones through retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. They contracted with a Chinese company for firmware updates. The Chinese company was collecting text msgs, cell tower data, call logs, contact lists, and info about loaded apps.
Seems like an amazing way for the Chinese to have access to information on millions of users in the U.S. The only outcome that I can find is that the FTC mandated a data security program.
In light of the concern by the US gov over Chinese companies with supply chain access like ZTE or Huawei, seems like this one was overlooked. ftc.gov/news-events/pr…
