Scholar-activism, public scholarship & public engagement make scholarly knowledge more accessible & ensures academic knowledge reaches wider audiences beyond the ivory tower. Yet academia still doesn’t value this type of labor sufficiently. This really irks me. Am I the only one?
There are academics who publish prolifically, but don’t undertake the labor (intellectual, emotional, physical, visible & invisible) that would constitute engaging more widely. We are assessed on research publications & pitched against one another, but what of wider impact?
Annual assessment, promotion, tenure, recruitment in academia should have greater valuation of non-conventional scholarly & public work. Continuing to fetishize only research publications not only feeds the predatory journal industry but devalues various forms of wider impacts.
I feel like a broken record saying all this for over a decade, making the case to colleagues, overlords, students, etc. The entire valuation system is not only exploitative but also limited. Too many things are devalued & invisibilized. This fosters toxic academic cultures IMO.
Praxis, engaged scholarship & scholar-activism labor of various sorts should be heeded more IMO. This is perhaps more a US problem bc of the tenure system, hyper-neoliberalization of academia, productivity fetishization of quantity over quality, etc. But the system can do better.
There are various models of change that different universities are experimenting with or have had success with. Here is one from the Netherlands shared by a fellow academic:
The point is that knowledge of various forms exists outside of academia, academia is not the only site of knowledge production but it does have a lot of hegemony. It behooves those inside academia to start shifting the colonial model by encouraging wider epistemic engagements.
There’s quite a bit of rhetoric of collaboration, public engagement, interdisciplinarity, etc across universities, yet still insufficient support, acknowledgment or celebration of such work. Coproducing knowledge is also more readily accepted in some disciplines over others.

Many folks are wondering why are economists paid twice+ as other faculty yet they generally mess up the world waaaaayyyyy more than us?🤔
As many have noted, reductionist thinking, excessive reliance on quantitative metrics, modeling that doesn’t account for a lot of social factors, result in economics influencing policies that have wider lived impacts, often disastrously. Must be nice to be paid 2-3 times for this
The hegemony of economics (followed by political science, another conservative problematic discipline in US) in academia writ large means skewing of perceptions of which kinds of knowledge are valuable. Reductive, mediocre analysis, however fanciful mathematically, is still that.

I don’t get why the terrorists are being cleared out and not arrested on the spot?
These terrorists & seditionists will clear out today and come back another day. Law enforcement should arrest these domestic terrorists ON THE SPOT. With curfew starting soon, they will only get away to do this terror & violence again. They are criminals.
If the people causing this violence were BIPOC people, they’d have been arrested, maimed, killed hours ago. Curfew starts now but all the white terrorists are still there & those leaving are promising more violence later. They ALL need to be ARRESTED!
