🧵 I once heard @BrianLehrer say on his radio show that the media doesn't have a liberal bias or a conservative bias--it has a bias toward conflict.
This observation, to me, explains everything most frustrating about the way national media covers Democrats vs Republicans.
Conflict is the defining feature of a story. Even a very young child knows that. The failures of the NYTimes, Chuck Todd, CNN, etc., can be traced back to the bias for conflict.
We're going to keep getting stories about diehard Trump supporters in diners, Congressmen on MTP who won't acknowledge the legitimacy of Biden's election, and the refusal to broadcast sensible press conferences from people who know what they're talking about.
Trump and his ilk and his would-be GOP heirs bring conflict into every story simply by being at war with reality. It makes a story out of their most casual remark.
"President Chooses Expert With Decades of Relevant Experience to Head Agency" can't compete. "Biden Voters in Diners Pleased That Their Candidate Was Elected" will never be a story. "Press Secretary Shares Facts About Pandemic" is, it seems, a yawn.
I don't know how we fix this.
