I'm going to tell y'all the opinion of autistic people with high support needs on Music by Sia. A thread:
They are both non-speaking and have intellectual disabilities. These people are Ioan (who's also partially deafblind) and Stijn (my younger brother.)
In their opinion (which matters most), Music was a realistic portrayal of an autistic person with high support needs, but because Maddie Ziegler isn’t autistic, it comes off like a caricature.
Ioan said the ideal actress for Music would be an autistic girl who doesn't necessarily have to have high support needs but must be non-speaking or mostly non-speaking. Stijn said the same thing, but she did have to have high support needs.
They didn’t watch the whole movie. They read the analysis and watched some clips. The fantasy sequences caused sensory overload when they looked at it, and Stijn said Sia might have made stimming into some kind of a dance. Ioan said it wasn't realistic that she would have dreams/
/like this, because “why is she sensory-overloading herself on purpose?” Stijn didn’t watch the prone restraint scenes, but he was prone-restrained by random people in a park once, and said it was horrifying that Sia put it in the movie. Ioan said it was fine that Sia showed it/
but there needed to be a scene about them discussing how prone restraint is bad immediately after and a “do not try this at home” warning on the scene of Music being restrained.
Stijn said the movie is barely about Music and that it’s more about the addict sister. Which he hates. He wanted a movie with a person like him. Ioan said the movie relied more on shock value and inspiration porn than trying to portray an autistic person with high support needs.
About the blackface: Both of these people are white, but Stijn is disgusted by the blackface, and Ioan doesn’t actually know what blackface is. They didn’t hear anything about the other racism.
SO! NTs, even though they’re only two autistic people, they are just like Music, so prioritise what THEY think. Not the parents of autistic people with high support needs. The actual autistic people with high support needs. They’ve spoken up about this movie. Boycott the movie!
(I don't support actually banning the movie but it should be condemned and used as how NOT to represent autistic people.)
Ioan and Stijn have the same opinion as me, too.
Btw, I forgot to mention this, but Stijn is extremely, extremely violent, and the kind of person ableists say would “need” restraint.
