Much of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workshop is simply bureaucratic balderdash to promote the school. But it begins to get more ideological about halfway through. First, we are treated to a helpful slide on the difference between equality and equity.
Next, we learn about not misgendering people. This involves calling anyone, no matter how sure you are of his or her gender, by his or her name only or by the pronouns “they/them.”
We then learn of “mircroaggressions.”
Apparently, identifying micro aggressions is far more important than knowing what a comma splice is and how to avoid it. But what’s education for if not the micromanagement of microaggressors?
Next, we are shown the harms that misgendering and unconscious bias can cause.
We must learn to notice our micro aggressions and work to put an end to them.
Never laughing at offensive jokes seems difficult. Almost any joke worth its salt could be said to be offensive to someone. I guess there goes comedy and satire altogether. But we must also “courageously oppose” those who make “inappropriate” remarks. Seems intentionally vague.
Searching questions we must all ask ourselves.
See if you can answer it. I passed with flying colors.
I was surprised that most of the whiteness/white privilege discourse was left out of the workshop. But I’m sure someone will soon flag this lapse as “highly problematic.” They might even take the advice given in the workshop and “courageously oppose” the workshop’s creators.
