I’ve lived over 50years of a blessed life in company with an ongoing mix of people from every walk of life. A joy of this life are those encounters in all kinds of places and circumstances - home, church, university, on the streets and in passing. This is my “normal.”
I have submitted to what is being called by some as the “new normal” in order to protect myself and others from the sudden appearance of a deadly virus. But it is clear that there are some who wish to continue the strictures well past a time they are necessary.
Many rightly see this effort as an ambition to exercise power over others - but it is of a particular kind. The ability to remake “normal” is the dream behind the revolutionary fervor that was inaugurated in modernity.
The ability of various rulers - bureaucrats, technocrats, aspiring tyrants - to extirpate and replace what most experienced as “normal.” Then as now, they are willing to sacrifice especially the weakest and most vulnerable to this ambition to remake our human reality.
Once you have demonstrated that any given forms of human life are completely revisable, any change becomes increasingly “normal” and even expected. Developing a supineness and pliability among the populace is the aspiration. Humans are “stuff” to be worked on, altered at will.
Practices and traditions are dispensable for the end of ceaseless revisability. What the modern scientific project achieved with the malleable “stuff” of the world becomes the ambitions of the modern scientists of politics. Hence, “follow the science” becomes the new command.
Here we see the need for a real “resistance” - not the faux “resistance” of the past few years engineered by every wealthy and powerful entity in the modern world.
Ordinary people will need to defend what remains of their folkways, practices, and traditions. As the biological disease wanes, what must be combatted is the political disease that seeks not to destroy life, but the reason we live.
